The story continues: Raising the Russian sub

It’s time to raise the sub. Almost.

Navy divers and a salvage team are preparing to conduct a salvage of the sunken Russian Submarine, which has rested at the bottom of the Providence River since it sank more than a year ago.

For the divers and salvage experts –– the same salvage team that worked on the recovery efforts after the August bridge collapse in Minneapolis –– this is a training exercise. For the rest of us, it’s a tease.

The Soviet cruise missile submarine sank during a storm last April. Today's effort is just one of several surveying and salvage operations that have taken place since then. But still, it’s submerged.

According to a statement released by the Department of Defense, the work will “culminate in the safe recovery of Juliett-484, a.k.a. a sunken Russian submarine from the Providence River sometime this summer.”

But probably not today.

I know how long and hard the Juliett group has worked to bring this historic vessel to the people of Providence (along with the carrier USS Saratoga). I wish all involved in this project continued success.

Raising this sub? Isn't that just like Rhode Island.Anything to bring in a buck. How could you not have been knowledgeable about the lack of buoyancy in the first place?Learn from the Battleship Cove memorial. No lack of buoyancy there. What if peolple have been board?

Now explain it to me like I was a five year old. Why did we get a Russian sub instead of an American sub??? That way we would be honoring our own sailors. How do people come up with these ideas. What an insult to the USN and it's brave seaman.

Hopefully it's repairable when it comes up. I never got a chance to see it before she sank.
