Weather update: Flood watch for tomorrow
According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch remains in effect from Friday morning through Friday afternoon for Rhode Island, portions of northern Connecticut. amd southeast Massachusetts.
According to the alert, snow and sleet will begin in northern Connecticut toward midnight and will spread into southeast Massachusetts as rain and sleet between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. This wintry mix will quickly change to rain early Friday morning and become heavy at times through midday, before ending early Friday afternoon.
Rainfall totals of 1.5 to 2.5 inches are expected. Since much of this rain will fall in a short period of time Friday morning, it will bring the potential for significant urban and poor drainage flooding and will impact the Friday morning commute. Smaller rivers and streams are expected to rise sharply, but are currently forecast to remain within their banks.
A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.
The service advises monitoring later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
