Providence firefighters work to free a woman trapped in her car after it collided with a school bus this morning on Admiral Street. Firefighters cut off the car's roof to free the woman. She was taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.

PROVIDENCE – The woman whose car rear-ended a Providence school bus this morning and who was rescued after crews worked perhaps 40 minutes to free her from underneath the bus suffered minor injuries.

Providence resident Judith O’Brien, 51, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital this morning, Police Sgt. Paul Zienowicz said. The bus driver and bus monitor, whose names were not immediately available, were also taken to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries, Zienowicz said.

O’Brien’s car ended up wedged underneath the school bus in the 7:38 a.m. accident at Admiral and Longmont streets.

“She was conscious and alert during the whole rescue operation,” acting Fire Chief Mark S. Pare said this morning.

The crash drew a host of firefighters and police. Rescue crews removed the roof of the car first and then took off both of the sedan’s front doors to free the woman, Pare said. In a case like this, as long as the patient is stable, Pare said crews basically peel the car away from the accident victim.

Once crews had access to the woman, “it took about two seconds to get her out of the car,” Pare said.

None of the Providence public schoolchildren on the bus was injured, Pare said. Another bus arrived at about 8:15 a.m. to take them to school. O’Brien was removed from the accident scene at about 8:20 a.m.

The low-speed accident remains under investigation, Zienowicz said. The police are investigating whether sun glare may have played a part in the crash, he said.
