Celona reports to prison a day early
John A. Celona reported to prison today -- a day early -- to begin serving his 2 1/2-year sentence for selling his public office.
Celona, the once-mighty senator from North Providence who aspired to be Rhode Island’s lieutenant governor, traded in his former life for a prison uniform, a bunk with other inmates in a former monastery in western Pennsylvania and a job that will pay anywhere from 12 to 40 cents an hour.
He walked into the low-security prison in Loretto, Pa., early in the afternoon. He had been ordered by a judge to report to prison by noon tomorrow.
He actually wanted to report last week, said his lawyer, William C. Dimitri. But due to overcrowding in the federal prison system, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons did not assign Celona to a prison until midday yesterday. He and his wife left for Pennsylvania later that day, said Dimitri.
More to come in tomorrow's Journal and on projo.com ...
