AG's office: Celona's state trial up in the air
PROVIDENCE -- Former state Sen. John Celona's trial date in state court is in flux.
Celona was sentenced last week to 2 1/2 years in prison on federal corruption charges.
He has a trial scheduled to begin in state Superior Court next week.
But a spokesman for the Attorney General's Office says the trial date is up in the air as Celona decides whether he wants to go to trial on the state charges.
Both sides met in a judge's chambers this morning and will do so again next week.
Celona has admitted accepting payoffs from companies seeking to influence State House legislation.
Prosecutors say Celona's cooperation has led to an ongoing federal investigation that includes seven politicians and seven corporations.
