Lunchtime was quiet outside DOT office/strip club

PROVIDENCE -- Shortly after noon, a Department of Transportation employee puffs on a cigarette outside the front door of her One Franklin Square office.

She pays little attention as a middle-aged man parks his black SUV next to a white DOT truck in the parking lot in front of her. The man tucks his shirt into his slacks as he walks in her direction.

He doesn't ring the buzzer to enter the DOT special projects office. Instead, the man rounds the corner and heads for the main door marked, "Desire ENTRANCE."

The strip club, which occupies the first floor of the state-owned building, opened at noon. Inside the small club, "lovely Sarah" dances on a small stage in a black thong as Desire employees set up the complimentary lunch buffet.

Led Zeppelin's D'yer Mak'er blasts through the sound system.

A club employee says he hasn't seen the front page story in today's Journal, which details terms of the club's agreement with the State of Rhode Island.

You can't hear Led Zeppelin at the DOT entrance. And there's no sign of the security detail provided by the club "to keep parties away from DOT personnel from noon to 5 p.m. each afternoon."

The DOT worker, who wouldn't give her name because she "values her job," said she didn't understand the fuss. The DOT and the club have been sharing the three-story brick building on Allens Avenue just off Eddy Street for years.

I don't understand what the big deal is. I don't understand why people get so upset when they learn that a strip club is owned by the state. Club Desire is a very nice club and it would be a shame if it was made to shut down. The girls that work at club Desire are normal young girls trying to make a living in this very hard world. Many, if not most of them are hard working Mothers trying to put themselves through college. An oppurtunity that they probably would not have if this job was unavailable to them. I can personally say that I am an exotic dancer and I am greatful to Club Desire. Club Desire is the ONLY club that I have ever worked at where I have been treated with respect and dignity. This is a very professional club. Many people have the misconception that strip clubs are filled with drug addicted women and criminal men. This is not the truth. In face many of the women are very intelligent and know that the money they make as an exotic dancer is far more than many college educated women make. Therefore, may of the women chose to work as exotic dancers until they are finished with their college educations and able to work as professionals. Many of the girls have used the money they make to buy homes and prepare for their futures. So, please do not be so quick to judge!!!

Quit candidly, the dancers comments are bull. Thats the most rediculas thing I've ever heard. I'm sure there are nice-girls out there trying to make good money and a living/surviving in this terrible jobless RI economy, but get off this coverup story about going to college.

Thats a crock. Most of these girls start off innocently experimenting with their "potential", then either like it, or quit. The money is so good they become addicted to it spiraling downwards into other dangerous avenues. This nonsence about college is to cover up their shallow and shameless pursuit of the big dollars.

Oh, granted there are a few nice girls trying to get quick cash and get out. Just like there are a few nice gentlemen in there for personal entertainment i.e. bacholor parties, or special occassions, or whatever. But the stereo types are not far off from the calibur or quality of both patrons and employees - lets be honest with ourselves and quite the fluff talk.

Thats like saying, your just alittle bit pregnant.
