The Block Island Town Council voted last night to suspend the waterfront inn's liquor license six days after hearing testimony about repeated rescue calls to treat patrons for extreme intoxication. The popular establishment was also fined a total of $2,000 -- $500 for each infraction. About 140 people attended the hearing at Block Island School, at which past and present managers of the legendary bar testified, as well as emergency medical technicians, Town Clerk Fiona Fitzpatrick said. "It was disheartening to hear Ballard's take very little responsibility for what's happening down there,'' Town Manager Nancy Dodge said. The town has accused the bar of serving customers alcoholic drinks until they were incapacitated and vomiting. A spokesperson for the establishment has said there is a misperception that Ballard's was over-serving people who, in fact, were drinking to excess on a nearby breakwall and docks. The bar was also accused of serving a minor on July 29. To The Owners of Ballards: I'm embrassed that town politics have caused you to lose your liquor licence. I have spent many years visting Block Island and have seen under age drinking in most all of the establisments on the Island where alcohol is served. I have seen your bartenders ask for proof of age when the line to the bar was 10 deep and refuse to serve folks who had a bit to much. So a few mistakes were made,"human" error. Let it go town people, what do you think, your town is a religous retreat? I want to thank you for the use of your great beach, music, wonderful staff, excellent food and your kindness to my family. Ballards is BLOCK ISLAND to us. See you next season...
