NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- A South Kingstown man was charged with driving under the influence and refusing an alcohol test early Tuesday after Narragansett police found him asleep in the driver's seat of his car, the engine running, in a left-turn lane near the Salt Pond Shopping Center. Marcus Drew Robinson, 26, of Dam Street in South Kingstown, was in a gold Buick on Point Judith Road (Route 108) and Woodruff Avenue at 2:33 a.m. Tuesday, a Narragansett Police report says. A patrol officer, responding to a report of an occupied vehicle not moving in the left turn lane, tried to wake Robinson by tapping on a window, but he didn't respond for about a minute, the police report says. He woke up confused, was at first unable to roll down the window, put the car in park and turn off the ignition, and then failed a series of field sobriety tests, the report says. Robinson was charged with driving under the influence, first offense, blood-alcohol balance unknown. He was arraigned in District Court, Wakefield, later that day and released after posting $200 cash for surety bail of $2,000. He was referred to the public defender and will have a pretrial conference on Jan. 5. Robinson must also respond to the R.I. Traffic Tribunal on refusing to submit to chemical tests for driving impairment, obedience to traffic signals and stopping on a travel portion of the highway. |
