PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Interfaith leaders gathered at a news conference Friday at the Jewish Community Center to defend Rhode Island's Muslim community in the aftermath of the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas.

The Rev. Donald Anderson, executive minister of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, said the news conference was called to "tell the Muslim community that they are not standing alone."

No anti-Muslim incidents have been reported in Rhode Island, said Anderson and Imam Farid Ansari of the Muslim American Dawah Center of Rhode Island.

"We know the actions of one individual did not represent the actions of one faith," said Marty Cooper, community relations director of the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, referring to the Muslim U.S. Army officer who is accused of murdering 13 and wounding many others on Thursday.

A bit premature and overly protective maybe? Why such a hurry on the sentiments?

Its wonderful that these local religious leaders will quickly jump in to support the Muslim community, and this gesture of support follows true to the culture of the various religious faiths that are doing this. One could also expect that some prominent Muslim leaders might take a stand and publicly condemn the actions of fanatics who claim to be members of the Muslim religion, or in some cases, claim to be acting on behalf of the Muslim religion. I personally have no problem with supporting Muslims in times like this, but Muslim leaders could help their religion immensely by taking a stonger public stance against this kind of violence. Is that such an unreasonable expectation?

Doesn't anyone in this miserable state feel for the victims of this gunman?

These people should be praying for their souls...

I have yet ti hear one incident of anti-Islamic sentiment as a result of this tragedy.

I guess our soldiers are considered less than dirt by our esteemed clergy..

I was at this conference. what the reporter left out was the thoughts and prayers that went out from the representatives of many faiths at the press conference to the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy, and our brave military who should have been safe where they were. And the Imam, when questioned about what the killer is reported to have said before he started shooting said "this man obviously had a distorted view of Islam. You cannot appeal to your God in the commission of a crime. This was not a religious act."

perhaps we have not had issues with retaliation here in RI precisely because our religious leaders ARE taking their authority to guide people seriously, and understand that an eye for an eye just creates a lot of blind people...

I realize that one person does not represent all; however, enough of the PC stuff. Read "Infidel" and see how our government is paying for local Imams to teach the Koran, etc. which has "kill the Infidel" (that's us) in it's teachings

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment posted by the person who asked why, when all other religions support Muslims to insure that they are not targeted because of the actions of one person, Muslims do not take a stronger and more vocal position on the atrocities committed by extremists in their communities. God Bless our troops and those 13 soldiers who died because of one sick individual.

While many Muslims are good people...they do have, within their ranks, way the hell too many sicko, radicals that are driven by a rabid and sick interpretation of their religious teachings and beliefs...more so then any other ethnic group in the world...something that has existed ever since their Prophet founded and established this so-called religion that denigrates women and encourages the murder of non-believers!!

If only religion could be removed from the face of this earth, including the jesus freaks it would be a much better place then it is! Think about it...almost since the beginning of mankind more wars have been fought and more men, women and children have been killed, murdered, butchered, etc. IN THE NAME OF RELIGION then for all other reasons combined!

From one cult (the Catholic Church) to another (Muslim Faith) good luck to all! Time to remove tax free status from all!!!
