ACLU criticizes Pawtucket's block of sexual-health clinic

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- A zoning matter that has prevented the Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health from locating in the Grant Building on Main Street is drawing criticism from the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU says its wants Mayor James E. Doyle to rescind a decision in which the center's director was told the location did not allow an educational use.

The ACLU asserts that before the center planned to open, Pawtucket officials received an inflammatory e-mail that insinuated sex activity would happen at the center; city officials "appear to have reacted to this misinformation reflexively, and inappropriately," Rhode Island ACLU executive director Steven Brown asserts in a letter dated Tuesday to the mayor.

The decision "raises serious constitutional concerns," the ACLU said in a news release Wednesday.

Why would we care what the ACLU thinks?

Because the ACLU is the only thing that stands between you and government tyranny.

The ACLU does nothing for legal Americans. All too often they are out spending our money defending the rights of illegal immigrants. Shut it down and put the money into a non partisan political defense fund.

I am always amazed by the ludicrous attacks on the ACLU. According to the its Web site, the ACLU works "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. These rights include:

Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
Your right to equal protection under the law - protection against unlawful discrimination.
Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
The ACLU also works to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; women; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; prisoners; and people with disabilities."

JTR, are you a member of the ACLU? If not, the organization is NOT spending YOUR money. The ACLU is a private organization, not funded by the government.

sib, your comment makes not sense at all. Exactly how is the ACLU Marxist. Please provide specific examples of Marxist policies endorsed by the ACLU. And many of the ACLU'S cases are about protecting freedom of speech. So if you were put in jail for your post, it would be the ACLU who defended you.
