100 jobs leaving R.I. as Liz Claiborne moves warehouse

The union representing about 120 workers at a Lincoln-based warehouse distribution center for Liz Claiborne Inc.'s jewelry division said Friday it has been informed by the company that the facility will be shut down this spring and the operations moved to another state, possibly Ohio.

Warren Pepicelli, a negotiator for the union, the New England Joint Board of Unite Here, said Liz Claiborne officials have made it clear that little can be done to thwart the relocation.

The union has been in negotiations with the company to try to cut a deal on severance, health insurance and job training issues. The latest session was an all-day affair Nov. 11, which reportedly produced some progress but no settlement.

The company released a statement saying only that it would close the center in the second quarter of next year "to better align our distribution capabilities with the realities of the current economic environment." It said about 100 people would be affected by the closure.

"I've asked if there's anything we can do" to prevent the move," said Pepicelli. "They said the corporate decision has been made."

He said the union has been told that Liz Claiborne will begin winding down its operations in February. The facility, currently the company's only jewelry warehouse and distribution center, will be closed by April 1. It was opened in 1990.

"We don't think it makes sense to shut this place down," said union spokesman Carl Proper. "They're doing excellent work. These people are not going to find an equally good job with benefits if this place goes out of state."

Proper was critical of the company, which makes most of its apparel overseas, for recently lobbying for a special federal tax break for large businesses. The union has asked Sen. Jack Reed to object to any tax reduction if Liz Claiborne cuts jobs in Rhode Island.

The union should thank their maker that the place stayed here this long. Haven't top union officials seen a drastic drop off of union membership in the private sector? Its not a mirage.

Unions have no one to blame but themselves. They're too expensive and no better quality than a non-union worker.

In other words...get the he11 out of RI...fast.

Another testimony to the fine job being done by the RI legislature on creating an environment where business can prosper.

words we will see frequently in the same article:

jobs leaving RI economic reality unions

Glad to be out of RI said:

The reality here is that the line about "to better align our distribution capabilities with the realities of the current economic environment" is short term for they didn't want to continue dealing with that Union and it's demands. Given that it's RI, I cannot blame them. The economic climate in Ohio is so much worse than in RI that they will easily be able to move their operations there and pay less because people there will take anything you give them so they have a job.

Yet another example of people not satisifed with having a job right now. If you don't like it, there are 1,000 people right now that I am sure would KILL to have that job. and look, now they've lost it.

why thanks again GOV CARICERI the "businessman..." NOT! can we please get this loser out of office before 2011??????

Poor little unions. Nobody wants to hire them anymore. Maybe poor little uniosn should get with the program and stop extorting the public and the taxpayer.

Just another reason why we moved out of state. The state is running everyone out of it.

Phil G said:

It's only 100 jobs. No big deal. It's not like there is an unemployemnt problem in RI. Heck they can walk right out and get a job at........... Wait! I know! The union will find them an other job. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

That company has got some nerve. Going to a place where they can make money instead of giving it to the state with the highest business taxes in the USA or the union slugs.

Don't worry. The dear leader, Obama will save them. won't he?

The comments from the union reps sound like they believe the company exists for their benefit.

"We don't think it makes sense to shut this place down," said union spokesman Carl Proper. "They're doing excellent work. These people are not going to find an equally good job with benefits if this place goes out of state."

Whether the employees can find equally good pay and benefits if the company leaves is not the company's concern.

If the union's attitude is as it seems, I can easily see why the company would want to leave.

"Atlas Shrugged" was written as a warning, not a prophecy. But it's become more true every day in Rhode Island.

Way to go GA. Constantino said he'll donate food to help them. We keep losing "trough people" every day now.

instead of voting for a governor lets vote to get rid of the union and send them to the north pole maybe they can get the elfs to join

I don't blame the unions, rather I blame the General Assembly for creating an anti-jobs growth state. We live in a state that rates in the top ten for the most taxed and the bottom nine for the ones facing the larger fiscal crisis. The state has a spending problem, rather than talking revenue sources, such as tolls on bridges, the General Assembly should be talking about reducing spending to reduce our tax burden. In the end reduced taxes will generate jobs.

Why is it when non-union companies close the regular blow-hards never have a comment. Oh that's right they just got put out of a job.

I'm sure every single business owner that operates a business in Rhode Island has contemplated the same thing (moving to another state).

Soon the only people left in Rhode Island will be public sector workers, illegal immigrants and welfare recipients.

Look, there's no frakkin' way this state can sustain itself as its' going. This system will collapse soon, like the true Ponzi scheme that it is.

dizgusted pvd : I can see why you are disgusted from PVD with the current top heavy, abusive administration. Don't blame (1) person who tried to fight high taxes on businesses, unions and top heavy government. The Gov is bucked from the GA who can't balance a budget without trying someway to put their dirty greasy fingers back in our pocket. Wake up and lay blame where it is due. If you can't see that these legislators are the power than you should never comment. This state is a sad example for other states to see what not to do to self deteriate. This is only the beginning.

Tincangunner said:

Hey Dizgusted...explain how Carcieri had anything to do with this...the GA makes the laws, overrides his vetoes and runs the show. Oh yeah, he doesn't like the greedy unions who are running this state into the ground, along with their cronies on Smith Hill. That's why union lackeys don't like him, yeah, that's the ticket. The blind followers of the unions can't see past the end of their noses. Maybe the union can get them head of the line at the unemployment office.

At least the General Assembly passed the important legislation like getting the Name change for RI on the ballot! Think maybe they should be worrying about the business enviroment?

Arthur1961 said:

Unions have brought this on themselves. Got so greedy and now it's not sustainable. And yet look at the Johnston FF's taking the town to court and sending out their own letters to town residents. Like we believe anything you say!! You want more and more and more. The mayor should put GPS devices in all town vehicles.
There was a firetruck at Autozone in Johnston 2 weeks ago on a Sunday morning. No reason for them to be shopping on taxpayer time and using taxpayer equipment.
Polisena and Pitochelli
nice job defending the taxpayer!!! Keep it up.
