Lucy, the dog from Iraq that was up for adoption because her owner must return to Iraq, has been placed in foster care in North Providence temporarily, Linda Monahan of ADOPT, or Animals Depend on People Too, said Thursday night.

Monahan said a Cranston family adopted Lucy but returned her for snapping when anyone came near while she was eating.

Lucy might also be pregnant. The woman in North Providence will foster Lucy until she has the puppies, Monahan said. After the puppies are weaned and if the food aggression can be corrected, Monahan said, Lucy will be adopted into a permanent home.

She'll get a veterinary visit this weekend, Monahan said.

I hope a/some dog trainers see this article and volunteer to help, this poor dog has probably had to fight to eat in the past making food agression understandable and very trainable. I wish Lucy the best she's a cutie !!

Anyone wanting to adopt Lucy permanently, after she has her puppies and they have been weaned and she's been spayed, can send email now or later to me - blakeberg@gmail.com - and to Linda Monahan of ADOPT - sage999cat@cox.net - who will be helping to screen potential owners of Lucy. She really wasn't aggressive in Iraq and this is unusual for her to be snapping. It may be she's trying to protect her puppies (inside) or that she's missing me and having a little trouble adjusting. The North Providence woman now foster-caring for her will help correct her of this problem and she'll be ready for permanent adoption soon. Many thanks to all who are emailing and calling us!

This is how you fix the snapping while she eats, just stay way from her while she eats. It doesn't take a dog along time to eat so just be patient and stay away.

My heart goes out to Lucy. It's one thing to be found and treated in Iraq. She's been restored to health to be dumped in RI. God love her. Now, I hope and pray that someone can care for her and have her spayed for her benefit. Due to my living situation, I cannot have a dog but I will continue to pray for this brave lady from Iraq.

Lucy is a sweet playful girl. The food issue will not be a problem once she realizes she is being fed a few times a day and we will be working on that. We will get a behavorist if needed. She is literally in a new world from what she was used to and dealing with new people so she needs an adjustment period. I just spoke to her foster mom and she had a good night and has been for a walk this morning. She is going to a vet today to x-ray her hip/pelvis area, to check how far along she is and to make sure that she is capable of delivering pups after the tramatic leg/pelvis injury she sustained as a pup. Her hernia will also need to be re-repaired when she is spayed. We will keep updates on our webpage: www.animalsdependonpeopletoo.petfinder.org

Susan and Cyndy are so right. Abandoned and abused dogs don't just forget their difficult past. We have two rescued dogs and you just have to find the right home, owners and be patient. Every day they make it worth it. What a great story.
