historyTRAFFIC 01 BM.JPG Journal file photo/ Bill Murphy Traffic is heavy on Route 195 east in Swansea as crews continue to clean up a fuel spill a day after a truck rolled over.
A year ago today: A tanker truck carrying 10,000 gallons of gasoline rolls over on Route 195 in Swansea about 5:40 a.m., spilling some of its contents and snarling traffic in both directions for most of the day as the Massachusetts state police close the interstate. The driver was not injured, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, said Sgt. Timothy Finn. Traffic was detoured onto Route 6 as hazardous-materials crews worked to clean up the spill. The westbound highway was reopened late in the afternoon. The truck was eastbound when it rolled over near the Maple Avenue overpass. The tanker landed on its side in the woods by the highway, spilling an estimated 200 gallons of gasoline, said Finn. The nearest house was a safe distance away, about a quarter of a mile, so no evacuation was necessary, he said. The road was closed at about 6 a.m. as a precaution against a possible explosion.

5 years ago today:
Police from three departments pursue a Fall River man for more than seven miles in a high-speed chase that ends when a Rehoboth officer disables the suspect's car. The chase began at about 12:49 p.m., in Fall River, when the city's police spotted a white Lincoln LS driven by Manuel Madeira, 36, of 965 Globe St., speeding west on the Braga Bridge, Rehoboth Sgt. James Medeiros said. Madeira refused to stop for the police, and kept speeding west on Route 195 through Somerset and Swansea, according to the police. The police said Madeira took exit 3, in Swansea, and began heading north on Route 118, toward Rehoboth. The Rehoboth police said they tried to pull Madeira over, but he refused to stop, and began passing other cars on the two-lane Route 118. As Madeira neared the Kelton Street area, Rehoboth Patrol Officer Jasson Ferreira threw a tire deflating device in his path. The police said Madeira veered toward Ferreira, forcing the officer to dodge the vehicle. The device punctured all four of the Lincoln's tires, causing them to begin deflating. The officers stopped Madeira near Bay State Road, then he jumped from the vehicle and began to run, the police said. When they caught up with him, he struggled, and officers used pepper spray to subdue him. The police said that Madeira had stolen the vehicle from Fall River, and charged him with receiving a stolen vehicle, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the vehicle), assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, malicious damage to personal property, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless operation, failure to stop for the police and speeding.

25 years ago today:
New Hampshire state police are looking for an Arlington, Mass., man on an attempted-murder warrant in the shooting of Pamela Dutwin, 19, of East Greenwich, R.I. Police said the woman was shot in the face. She was hospitalized in New London, N.H., where she was reported in stable condition. Lt. Joseph Broderick said a warrant has been issued for Anthony T. Cipolle, 19, who was said to be armed with a handgun and driving a small gray car with Massachusetts license plates.

On the national front:
