NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A fire in a collection box filled a church with smoke Tuesday morning, but caused no structural damage, according to Battalion Chief Gerald R. Capaldi of the North Providence Fire Department. Capaldi said the Presentation Church, 1083 Mineral Spring Avenue, was empty when firefighters arrived shortly after 10 a.m. He said firefighters found the fire confined to a wooden box used to hold donations for candles. "It took us some time to locate the source," Capaldi said, adding that the fire appeared to have been an accident. "There was a significant buildup of smoke, which took us quite some time to remove because of the vast open area of the church," the battalion chief said. |
