Testimony: Fiancée saw no doctors examining Woods

WARWICK, R.I. -- The fiancée of the late Michael Woods testified in Kent County Superior Court Friday that she had no recollection of any Kent Hospital doctors examining Woods during the first hour of his arriving at the hospital emergency room the day he died.

Lisa Konopka testified in the Woods' family's negligence suit brought against Kent Hospital by Woods' brother, the actor James Woods. She said that, except for approximately 15 minutes when Woods was in the x-ray department, no doctor examined him until she screamed for help as he suffered what became a fatal heart attack July 26, 2006.

Her testimony contradicts testimony by several Kent Hospital employees. Hospital nurses and doctors, who have previously testified that Woods was looked at and talked to by at least two doctors in that first hour.

Two Kent Hospital doctors, John McCue and Kelli A. Naylor, testified previously that they met with and examined Woods, at times with Konopka present. Konopka insisted she had no recollection of meeting Naylor, the doctor who was overseeing Woods' treatment, until she was called into a meeting room with Naylor and told Woods had died.

In afternoon cross examination by hospital lawyer David Carroll, Konopka stopped short of denying that McCue or Naylor had seen Woods or that other staffers had taken information from him, saying that she could not recall it.

Konopka said the only time she and Woods were separated from the time he arrived at the emergency room at 4:25 p.m. until he was stricken in a hallway at 7:10 p.m., was his visit to the x-ray department.

Even on that point she disagreed with hospital employees testimony and records. She said Woods walked to the x-ray department on his own; hospital records indicated he went on a stretcher.

She also said she had no recollection of telling a nurse or doctor that Woods had suffered from a panic attack that day, though hospital records indicate nurses and doctors were told he did.

Carroll presented Konopka with a July 28, 2006 Providence Journal article that quoted her saying "then he started having some kind of panic attack."

She denied making that statement.

Konopka is scheduled to return to the stand Monday afternoon.

The emergency care at Kent Hospital is atrocious.

I know several people who were misdiagnosed, or were never even seen by doctors within a reasonable time there. I am aware of one individual who suffered a stroke, and they put him in a room and he wasn't seen or treated for hours.

There is definitely something wrong there. I hope the Plaintiffs win the lawsuit.

The only decent hospital left in this state is Miriam; and with the RIH merger, that's going to go down the tubes as well.

We live 45 minutes away from some of the best medicine in the country - Mass General, UMass Medical, Brigham and Womens, etc.

Go there. The doctors around here are all hacks as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, but the guy looked like a walking billboard for Lipitor!

Doctors and nurses are not to judge those who walk through the doors. Their duty is to treat each patient to the best of their ability. I highly doubt that leaving him in the hallway was their best. I suppose they told his fiance to stay in the waiting room. She should have insisted, lied if she needed to, in order to stay by his side and see that he got proper care. I had to do so when my husband was in the same ER. I ran out only to call our family MD (who was on Kent staff). They said they had called our doctor, but he never received a call. After my call, our doctor was at Kent in ten minutes. And, heads rolled!

I have been at Kent County E.R. and have seen the walking disasters that come in looking for miracles. Obese, out-of-shape, prescription abusing people who expect the E.R. staff to make all their boo-boos go away. Did you ever think that somethings are so far gone that not even the best will help. Instead of complaining about every hospital in Rhode Island not being adequate, look in the mirror and see what they are working with. If all hospitals were as bad as being said here, the JCAH and Health Department would close them down. Maybe someone will write a comment about a good experience they had a Kent, I know I've had many. If you're looking for miracles, stick to reading the bible and pretend the real world does not exist. What morons !!!!!!!!!!

Why don't all of you "Kent Haters" stop GOING to the hospital and self medicate? You obviously think you know more than the doctors and nurses. I'm sure that your houses have a full staff of OTHER "experts" who can make the correct diagnosis and treatment recomendations. Good luck!

The doctors in Kent's ER tried to tell us that my father-in-law was having "neck and shoulder spasms", and not anything major. My partner, who is a nurse, had to point out "then why are his pupil's reacting differently??" when we finally arrived hours later. The doctor never even checked his pupil reactions, when he was presenting with excruciating head pain! After that, they still refused to admit something was majorly wrong with him. Thank GOD a visiting nurse kept pushing the issue, and finally got my father-in-law transfered to RI Hospital, where they found a subarachnoid hemorrhage... after he had suffered permanent brain injury, of course, and will never be the same man again. NEVER trust Kent hospital.

Whatever happened at Kent, I don't find her testimony credible. Now she's even denying what she told the Journal.

If she lied about that, I have to assume she could be lying about everything else she said.

And if she's lying that sheds doubt in the entire case against Kent.

Sounds more and more like an attempt to get money or cover up the Woods' family's feelings of guilt. If his family had really cared about him, they would have done something about his health before that.

No doctor examined woods yet an xray was ordered?

He 'walked' to xray? No one is allowed to 'walk' to xray in a hospital. You are not even allowed to walk out the door upon discharge.

She said something immediately after the event and now denies.

Maybe Woods should have paid the fiance' the same as the expert witness to help the case.

james Woods underwent an angioplasty in May of 2006--perhaps his brother should have seen a cardiologist and gotten a work up knowing the risk or better primary care.

James Woods has also had sued people before--perhaps this is just another in his list of people to sue.

Been many times to this ER with a very ill mom....If you are not brought in in an ambulance you wait in the waiting room sometimes for more then a hour before your info is taking...Once info is taken, you take a seat until your name is called to go into back to be treated...Once in the back room your vitals are taking then a nurse asks what is going on..... you can be in this back room for hours before a DR even tends to you...I do know however that if xray is to be taking it is after the Dr sees you and says he is ordering a xray...again could be a few hours before this happens...The Nurses keep you comfortable as best they can...There are many rooms in this back area I would say close to thirty and many times are filled to the max and patients are put into the aisle...If there is only two Drs that are working these rooms figure it out how long you are waiting...Being critical patients first.....if your illness is minor expected time to be in here is 6 hours and thats at express...Definitely something wrong with this ER.....Oh and if you arrived and there is a shift change...the nurses have to consult with the incoming shift let them know what is going on from room to room critical time passes here...Oh and if the ERs computor system goes down while you are there everything has to be handwritten then put into the computor when it comes back up.........maybe more time should be spent with the patient and less time on the paperwork,You really have to be there when this part happens with the computor glinches.......The nurses do the best they can and many times are understaffed in this area..Their hands are tied till the Drs come along and make their prognosis of the patients...A nurse cannot say this person should have a xray..Which I think if a patient comes in with chest pain get the blood work and the xray done immediatly.......Call your DR yourself let him know you are on you way to emergency room..Because it is true sometimes the staff says they called and they may have but not actually talked to the Dr but to the emergency line themselfs......NEVER allow your love one go into back without someone with them and question everything the nursing staff does...It is important because your love one is ill and are not thinking straight they need you to be their voice...Eyes and Ears

Dr. Naylor is no longer @ Kent Co. Hospital, thank God!
What I don't understand is, does Atty. Mark Decof have access to the Kent Co. Hosp. files concerning these doctor's? Have there been previous incidents w/ these doctor's? I know there have been w/ Dr. Naylor, and her excuse is to put the blame on the nurse's .
I always scroll down after reading an article curious as to what people's opinions are. It is unfortunate, there are very few intelligent comments. From the comments it is clear they haven't even read the article.
Deb's comment, Konopka was by his side, except for when he went in for X-Ray's., and no one in there right mind would allow anyone in there except the patient and the technician . Do you not comprehend "Radiation"?
As for ee53, great advice, drive 45 min. to Boston for care. There are just too many flaws in that statement than I have the time to list. But you feel free to take your own advice.
Am I too assume "Comments" are for people who want to stand on a soapbox?
Kent Co. Emergency is under-equipped and short staffed period, and as a result this tragedy occurred.

My stepfather suffered a heart attack in the ER at Kent County Hospital last February 3rd. He flatlined. His life was saved by the staff at Kent County Hospital and now he is doing terrific, with little to no damage to the heart muscle because they were so responsive.

Our family thanks them.

Here is a tip to all you Rhode Islanders that think driving 20 minutes requires packing an overnight bag. You need emergency attention? Go to SOUTH COUNTY!! The extra 20 minute ride will save you 6 - 8 hours of waiting, and may save your life.
