EAST GREENWICH, R.I. - After scaling back the fines and broadening its scope, the Town Council has passed a motor vehicle noise ordinance designed to stop disruptions by loud motorcycles, thumping car-stereo subwoofers and defective exhaust systems if their operators travel through town. The new rules, now in effect, say anything plainly audible 200 feet away is illegal and subject to a fine. Sounds that don't cross a property line are exempt. The new ordinance evolved after the council, on July 27, passed an emergency ordinance that tried to quell noisy motorcycles by banning non-standard exhaust systems. It imposed fines starting at $500 and going as high as $1,000 for subsequent violations. The fines in the replacement ordinance are down to $100 for the first offense, $250 for a second offense and $500 for additional violations. |
