| Today in history: Escaped killer caught in Providence »
CRANSTON, R.I. -- The police have lodged additional charges against a driver whose car struck a house on Sunday. John Viveiros, 20, of Providence, now faces four felony counts of driving to engager, injury resulting, said police Chief Marco Palombo. Palombo said an investigation showed that Viveiros was headed south on Narragansett Boulevard in Pawtuxet at a high rate of speed about 1:40 a.m. when his car failed to negotiate a curve at Ocean Avenue, instead crashing against a house at 92 Ocean Ave. Four passengers were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Palombo said. Viveiros was first charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and refusing to take a chemical breath test. On Wednesday Viveiros appeared at a hearing at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal. His license was suspended for refusing the test. He then was brought before Judge Jeanne LaFazia in Kent County District Court. LaFazia set bail at $26,000 with surety. He is due in district court Thursday for a violation hearing on an unrelated charge. |
