PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Carcieri on Tuesday vetoed legislation that would have limited the way government uses electronic devices that allow tracking people and objects like motor vehicles, something privacy advocates are concerned about. The governor's veto messages on two similar bills objected that they would prevent school officials from using radio-frequency identification tags to keep track of students. He said that RFID devices should be used with caution, but that school officials should be able to use them with parents' permission. The veto messages did not address a related issue, the data being collected through systems like E-ZPass, the state's electronic toll collection system. That can be used to track a vehicle throughout the northeast. The bills would have required police and others to get a court order, a requirement with other searches and seizures, to get the information. Carcieri's press secretary, Amy Kempe, said the E-ZPass question didn't come up because the governor had to address the entire bill. "We're not saying one way or the other on the other parts," she said. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. This governor, whome I voted for, turned out to be an arrogant moron (a horrible combination in such a position). I'm sorry, but he vetoed the improved access to public records bill that the AG even supported. Fights gay marriage. Allows govt to track citizens with no warrant. Does this guy have a shred of respect left? And one of his closest cronies, Rep. Larry Ehrhardt is a complete nightmare. At least with the dems, you kinda know where they stand. They dont hide it behind religeous and moral grandstands and then do even worse things against the people like Carcieri and Ehrhardt do. Sad. Dandy Don, we're countin the days until ANYONE else is sworn in.
