PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Carcieri landed on national television Monday night as the "star'' of a biting -- but laugh-out-loud -- segment on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report'' about his veto of a bill that would have given gays the right to claim the bodies and make funeral decisions for their same-sex partners. With The Journal's front-page story about Carcieri's veto as his starting point, the mock-conservative Colbert begins broadly with this observation -- "Gays ruin everything sacred, just look at what Michelangelo did to the Sistine Chapel. They'll never scrub that stuff off'' -- then zeroes in on the case that prompted the legislation. A sampling: "I believe that the governor might not be going far enough if we really want to protect the sanctity of traditional decomposing... It might be time to bar gays from having funerals... and hear me out... I am not a monster... I am in favor of civil end-of-life ceremonies. It's just like a funeral... except legally you don' have to bring a covered dish... And instead of defiling our traditional graveyards, gay people can have their own same-sex cemeteries. We'll call them 'same-eteries'." There was no immediate comment from the Carcieri administration. Watch the spoof in its entirety below. View with caution as the 5-minute, 45-second piece does include some off-color references. The Rhode Island specific portion begins approximately 1 minute and 45 seconds in.

Brilliant. Unfortunately, it would be funnier if it weren't so painfully ironic.

Congratulations, Don. You have totally succeeded in making yourself and all of those who voted for you look stupid on a national level. You are a complete joke and embarrassment. You have managed to ruin our beautiful state fiscally and emotionally. Your insensitivity and discrimination against RI's gay citizens is truly appalling. Shame on you, Don. And shame on any Rhode Ilsander who continues to stand by your message of hate. I, for one, am sick and tired of listening to it.

Awesome! And, props to the Journal for publishing this video despite Colbert's swipe at the RI press.

Yes, this sums it up nicely. You know your political career is over when you're parodied in abscentia on the Colbert Report.

Well Carcieri gets what he deserves.

Carcieri has made Rhode Island a national disgrace and embarrassment.
And for "Scott" commenting above that, "Liberal Humor is pathetic": Yeah, I guess you prefer the 24/7 joke that is Faux News.

Melissa :"You have managed to ruin our beautiful state fiscally..."
Regardless of where you stand on the gay marriage / funeral rights debate, you can't seriously believe the Governor is totally responsible for the abysmal condition of this State?! This state has been in the tight grip of the Democrat and thier union puppet masters for decades. They run this state like the mob. If you want to blame someone for ruining this "beautiful" state fiscally, then point the finger at those leaches.

The Governor was right to veto this bill. No matter how much the liberal left wing media predictably blasts him and tries to bully him and their viewers to their side, they will never be right. Instead of falling all over yourselves to promote immorality and prove how "progressive" you are, why don't you instead the Bible (especially the last book, the book of Revelation) and get yourselves right with God.

Although it is not politically correct to stand for age old principles based on supernatural and natural laws, some of us still do. Thank God for Don Carcieri and his wife Sue. Some of us in the "Silent Majority " agree with them and deplore that Rhode Island has become San Francisco East.

again, another reason to be embarassed that I am from Rhode Island. Next time I am away and I am asked where I am from, I will say yes- Long Island. Lets not forget his wife, because he can not say anything without her approval- I am glad you all voted her into office.

the real question is how many votes does it take to override a veto in the legislature?!!

The cruelty behind the defenders of "traditional marriage" would cause a real Jesus minded person to weep uncontrollably for decades. Colbert nails this issue, time and again like no other I have seen.

Frank-The San Francisco of the east? Are you kidding? Kara Russo- Who's God? Yours? Thank you Colbert report for again nailing it! Classic!

I am truly disgusted by the opinions of the religious right in this state and across the nation. No one is trying to force you to live by their ideals or supernatural religious beliefs, yet you think the law - which everyone is required to follow, regardless of faith - should bend to YOUR ideals and YOUR preaching. This country needs to get it's act together, keeps it's laws secular so that they are fair and work for EVERYONE.
