Update: Roberts says break-in unrelated to her job

CRANSTON, R.I. -- Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts says that a break-in Sunday at her Edgewood home was unrelated to her state position.

In a news release Monday, Roberts confirmed the break-in and said she and her family were away when it occurred.

"There is no indication that this break-in was in any way related to my role as lieutenant governor," Roberts said.

Michael Tanaka, a spokesman for the lieutenant governor, said the burglars stole personal electronics, including a TV.

An "alert neighbor" checking on the Roberts' house at 254 Norwood Ave. at 2:10 p.m. Sunday discovered a broken window and called the Roberts, who called the police, according to a police news release.

The house, where Democrat Roberts lives with her husband, Thomas H. Roberts, and their two daughters, is right off Broad Street and close to Roger Williams Park.

Responding officers entered the house and found "evidence of a house break," the police said. A patrolman remained at the house until the family returned to secure the property, they said.

The house break remains under investigation.

Why wasn't a police officer postsed in my driveway when my house was broken into???

JerryRI said:

I am surprised that she did not blame the governor for the break-in. She blames everything else on him.

This is not the only break in in that neighborhood this weekend either. I live 2 streets over and there was at least one house on my street broken into this weekend also.

Another neighbor said:

The CPD has talked a good game about policing the Edgewood Area, which has been hit particulary hard over the past year with break-ins etc. but CPD has done very little to combat the problem.

Myself as well as many other neighbors in the Edgewood area have been victims of crime (break-ins). Unfortunately we don't qualify in securing extra added security of a police crusier in our driveway nor has the Mayor, the Council and City taken previous concerns serious to combat this problem. Maybe now that will change becuase an elected official has become a victim.

I dunno, neighbor. My neighbors received that courtesy from the police until they could get home and they're certainly not state officials, just regular retired people. Maybe you need to have a chat with your police department or town manager.

The break-in wasn't related to her role as Lt. Governor. And what exactly does that "role" entail?

Not related to her job as lieutenant governor. Aren't we all still trying to figure out whe she does as lieutenant governor? The guy took some electronic stuff and some literature on retirement communities in Florida.

To Neighbor: A patrolman remained at the house until the family returned to secure the property. That's standard police practice when a robbery occurs and no one is home. Don't try to make an issue where there isn't one. That's vulgar.
