PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin on Monday said he was "in no way" referring to U.S. Rep. Patrick K. Kennedy's well-publicized mental health issues, when -- on talk radio -- he cited Kennedy's "increasingly erratic and unpredictable behavior" during an escalating dispute over whether Kennedy is fit to be a Catholic. The debate centers on Kennedy's support for abortion rights. "No, not that at all," said Bishop Tobin. "... His fitness for office is nothing that I would ever comment on. I think that's up to the voters to make that decision. But I am concerned about his statements and his reactions to some of these recent events. No, I'm concerned about him and I'm praying for him. As I said before, my door is always open and I hope we can bring a good reconciliation to all this." Neither Kennedy nor his spokeswoman, Kerrie Bennett, could be reached for comment Monday. Bishop Tobin characterized Kennedy's behavior during a Monday morning interview on WPRO's John DePetro radio show during discussion of Kennedy's allegation that the bishop two years ago forbade him from receiving Communion. "This debate with the congressman is really unfortunate," the bishop said on the DePetro show. "I'm praying for him, I wish him well. I need to say honestly I'm very concerned about the congressman's increasingly erratic and unpredictable behavior. I think a lot of us are concerned about that." Bishop Tobin also said he hoped and prayed that Kennedy's "friends and supporters and his staff are giving him the help and the assistance he needs at this time." The bishop was asked about those statements during an unrelated appearance at La Salle Academy later on Monday. Asked again about his characterization of Kennedy as "erratic," Bishop Tobin said, "Well again some of the statements he's made have been difficult for me to understand. For example, two weeks ago here in Providence he said wasn't going to talk anymore about his faith or his status in the Church, and then he returns to Washington and gives a major interview about that." "His statement that was released over the weekend that somehow I'd instructed all the priests to refuse to give him Holy Communion has no basis in truth. Again I'm not in a position to analyze him at all. But I am concerned. I hope he's doing OK. I'm concerned about his personal, and ultimately his spiritual well-being. That's what this is all about." Kennedy asserted on Friday that the bishop, in a 2007 letter, "instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion." The bishop said, "If he took it as an instruction, so be it, but it was really a request."

Bishop Tobin's behavior is equally "erratic" to that of Rep. Kennedy. His stances including illegal immegration also do a dis-service to his church members and fellow Rhode Islanders. I'm quite sure that if the meeting between the two parties had remained closed, then none of this media circus would be transpiring. It seems that the Bishop wants his "15 minutes of fame" in the national press. Meanwhile legal citizens and documented foreigners continue to lose their jobs and healthcare while this snipping goes on. Bishop...please check your ego at the door and stay off the radio shows! What's next Fox News?

I love this dispute. Kennedy is a loose cannon and his behavior is bad. He does not represent our State well. It is time we get some competition in the field. It would be great to have a Democrat compete against him in a primary. I don't think the church should be involved in politics but if get us someone new and better in office I am all for it.

Tobin was just on HARDBALL, the MSNBC news program. He advocates LEGAL PENALTIES FOR WOMEN WHO UNDERGO ABORTIONS, AND PEOPLE WHO PERFORM ABORTIONS.
If I advocate a political position, it arises from the fact that I PAY PROPERTY AND INCOME TAXES.
IF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH -- OR ANY OTHER RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION -- WANTS THE SAME KIND OF POLITICAL INFLUENCE, THEY SHOULD PAY TAXES, TOO !!
OTHERWISE, KEEP THE HANDS OF THESE OLD WHITE MEN OFF MY WIFE'S UTERUS !!!

Stop and realize that christianity doesnt beleive in abortion
Thou shalt not kill
No matter how it gets spun to take a human life is murder especially an unborn baby who never had anythng to do with being conceived it was the poor judement of the mother and father .
Of all the means of birth control at hand how is it all these women keep getting pregnant and keep getting abortions
Many would have you believe its all young girls yet a vast majority are women of adult age who think nothing of killing their children
answer-- use birth control if yu dont want to get pregnant... period

I think they both have a bit of bi-polar and both are missing their meds!

Tobin will make the rounds now on all the talk radio shows maybe a call in to Rush Limbaugh, an appearance on Hannity finally culminating in a special one hour return of the Jerry Springer show co hosted by Tobin.
I'm sure DePetro didn't have time to ask Tobin what the church is doing to ensure that they don't recruit sick twisted child molesters or if they are still playing the game of move the molester after complaints.

This is getting intolerable. Doesn't this Bishop know Christian text? "Physician, heal thyself!" if the church paid as much attention to its priests as it does to non-catholic women, the world would be a lot better off.

Somebody should have advised Tobin back in 2005 that RI was founded on the principle of religious toleration. Shame he's an interloper with no background in the state and no appreciation of the Rhode Island mindset. Even greater shame that he's an extremist, a right-wing scold, and a hypocrite. When's he going to crack down on all the other RI Catholics who support abortion rights, or the death penalty, or the war that the Vatican opposed?
Tobin and Carcieri are doing their best to make RI look like some backwater from the Bible-belt.

The Bishop takes a cheap shot. Real nice. How very Christian. Hypocrite! The Bishop's behavior is shameful and he needs to STOP getting in the gutter and take the high road, given his position.

If Catholic Bishops want to try their hand at writing laws and developing public policy, they should run for office like any other politician. This surreptitious attempt to control elected officials and establish a backdoor theocracy flies in the face of everything this country stands for. Stand for election and be judged or shut up.

In older days the church was respected, Catholics went to mass and confession and Bishops stayed out of politics. Then we learned that the church hierarchy and the diocese was involved in organized child molesting and cover-up. People began to take a look at the breathtaking tax free holdings and pondered weather this organization's assets should be tax free and beyond the reach of civil actions.
Perhaps when the papacy sees fit to hand over Cardinal Law, one of the nations biggest child molesting enablers, it will regain some respect. Frankly, Tobin's just the latest in a sorry line of mudslingers with a collar. I learned a great deal at St. Patrick's.

The church also opposes birth control. Are all Catholics who take birth control not Catholics? Should they too not receive communion? I found Bishop Tobin's attacks to be passive agressive. I expect more from my clergy. Regardless of what Ptrick Keneddy does you are still a Bishop. Keep your advice confidential between priest and parishoner. Do you publicly attack others' mental health publicly when they disagree with you? WWJD

All too few - of the MANY - construe the fabled old testament utterance of their Lord to "go forth and multiply" as anything but a Roman/Catholic encouragement to breed more subjects/taxpayers/"tithers"- to the comfort and gain of the string-pullers in Rome.
Nowhere did Christ address the topic of population profligacy.
And the organization which pretends to be "his"-"church" is presently lacking in adherents.

Bishop Tobin,
You're actually making me feel sympathetic to Patrick Kennedy. Your "erratic" comments make you sound like a condescending "I just hope he's OK" patronizer. If you've got something to say, spit it out, man! Don't go all passive-aggressive on us! I mean, what would Jesus do?
