PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Fire Department is investigating a firebombing at a two-story house at 283 Union St. Monday night, according to Battalion Chief Josesph Desmarais. Desmarais said someone climbed a bulkhead under a second-story window, broke the window and tossed some type of accelerant into a bedroom that was occupied by a 17-year-old boy. He was not hurt, Desmarais said, but a woman in the house was treated by rescue for smoke inhalation. No one else was injured, he said. There were five people on the second-floor apartment and five on the first when the incident occurred, Desmarais said. He estimated that it was 11 p.m. or later when the fire was set. He said that many of the inhabitants of the house were asleep. They told the Fire Department they heard a window break and then the fire started. The fire damaged the exterior of the back of the house and part of the bedroom on the second floor. Desmarais said the Fire Department is treating the fire as an arson and it is likely that the tenants on the second floor were the targets based on their acquaintances with some people. "We are looking at it like it was targeted. Somebody knew somebody (there) they had some issues with," Desmarais said. |
