Barrington teens caught drinking at leadership conference

BARRINGTON, R.I. -- Six Barrington High School students have been suspended after getting caught drinking in their hotel room while attending a national leadership conference in Baltimore.

Fifty-five Barrington students were attending the four-day Fall National Leadership Conference of the Future Business Leaders of America, which began Nov. 5, when a chaperone checked a room and discovered that six students were in possession of alcohol.

According to Barrington High School Principal Joseph Hurley, on Nov. 7, the last night of the conference, a student who apparently had been drinking called home. A family member, who was concerned about how the student sounded, contacted one of the chaperones, Hurley said.

When the chaperone entered the room, the adult discovered that the students had been drinking. Since the conference was to end the next day, the chaperones decided to stay at the conference and leave after it was over.

On Monday, the high school's two assistant principals, Nicole Varone and Michael Messore, spent the day interviewing the students and their parents. Afterward, they imposed a five-day suspension on all six teenagers.

Hurley said that his office will look into imposing further sanctions against the teenagers. According to the school activities handbook, students who violate the school's drug and alcohol use policy can be suspended from participation in other school-sponsored clubs and activities.

"We will continue to stress the importance of decision-making," Hurley said. "In this case, all of the students involved will meet with our student assistance counselor to talk about those decisions.

"You know the work we have been doing with the new Breathalyzer policy and The Life of an Athlete program," he said. "This is confirmation that we have to be vigilant and continue these efforts."

Look at the economic turnfall we had as a result of the CURRENT business leaders in America. The future ones were obviously following suit and preparing themselves for similar runs later on.

Barrington students drinking! I'm shocked. Shocked! Again.

A Barrington parent had to call Baltimore and tell the chaperones that the kids were drinking?

Sounds about right.

What were the chaperones doing, anyway?

Well done!! to the family member of the student who didn't sound right on the phone. Your action may have save those students from an unthinkable tragedy. These kids just don't get it do they!!
How sad!

Obviously the problem is not being address properly. How about arresting them?

A Concerned Parent said:

First of all this was in Baltimore so an arrest would have had to be by the Baltimore police. Second, on an ovrnight trip chaperones are not in each and every room with the students. Students are 4 to a room usually and there were 2 chaperones (according to the article). Kudos to the parent that reported this to the chaperones.
Why doesn't this make the paper and the news when it happens in other towns? It happens every week all over the state.

They must be following in mommy and daddies footsteps!!!!

henry: what tragedy could happen in a hotel room? they could order more pay-per-view than they could afford?

on another note, every school has a large population of students who drink, or do drugs, and they're not all out of control. The thing HERE is, Barrington students seem to be sooo dumb that they screw up not getting caught. Most kids don't get caught.

And who calls their parents drunk from Baltimore?

When this happens in Providence the comments are very different. Everyone comments about how people are living like animals and comments are very nasty, but when an issue like this happens in the suburb. The comments changes. Kids in the suburbs kills each other every year, because of alcohol and drugs. Everyone has problems, so we need to think about ours before we judge others.

Barrington has been "cracking down" and "enforcing" and instituting "breathalyzer" tests and talking and wringing its hands for several years now, all of it focused on policing, policing, and policing the kids' external behavior. Or providing "healthier" and "safer" outlets for the kids, all of the recreational sort. Hasn't worked. Same types of things keep happening.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of starting at the punitive end of the spectrum, Barrington could worry about the beginning point, and start talking about what kinds of citizens these kids are becoming. They all live in the "Barrington bubble," which is privileged, upper-middle class, and self-referential if not self-congratulatory (talk to parents and they'll all tell you — somewhat defensively — about how wonderful, just wonderful, all the kids are). That's a prescription for keeping doing the same old things.

What exactly IS the reward system for kids who might wish to develop a social or civic consciousness? And in so doing just sort of naturally avoid alcohol and drugs? What rewards are there for positive behavior, rather than the avoidance of bad behavior?

These kids were at a "leadership" conference for future business leaders. It figures. Business hasn't distinguished itself in recent years for caring about society. So these kids went off to learn to excel in their embrace of the business ethos. Anything goes, just don't get caught.

What about service to their commmunity? What about learning how to give back in the form of service, not in the form of noblesse oblige or charity (e.g. gathering sweatshirts for the homeless), not just on Sundays at church, but in the form of genuine learning, in and out of school, about how to participate in making their world a better place?

Barrington could do this, but has not. Why not?

Lynn said:

Don't these kids ever learn? Good for the parent who called the chaperone!

It's amazing to me that it always seems to be Barrington kids in the news. Why does Projo just target Barrington? I'm sure there are other communities that have the same problem.

What was the leadership conference in? How to be an alcoholic at a very early age?

Steve in Coventry said:

Maybe we need to take the Bar out of Barrington.

Thats the kind of national leadership we need in this country....lol...no not realy... but im sure when they put that they attended a national leadership conference on their resume they should put that they also attended the national beer convention as well.......

We all should care about this. I agree that the family member who reported this to the chaperones should be commended. Too often parents don't take this seriously until something bad happens. Yes, this is Barrington and it has happened here before but everyone in every town in Rhode Island should take this as a wakeup call that this IS happening in YOUR town and school no matter where you are and how GOOD your kids are or how much the police or school officials are doing about it. You need to tell your kids EVERY DAY that this will not be tolerated in your home and is against your family's rules as well as illegal and they will get in trouble and you will not get them our of trouble and they WILL have to face the penalties and god forbid they be the ones that they make a lesson out of and get really harsh treatement!

Jack Hamilton said:

Will there be sanctions against the so-called chaperones? It seems to me that they were not doing the job they were assigned to do. Who bought the booze, the chaperones?

corey said:

"Why doesn't this make the paper and the news when it happens in other towns?"

Since the Providence Journal is all over everything like white on rice, I would say the answer to that is because it DOESN'T happen in other towns. While other towns may have their own share of problems, it seems that the well-brought-up children of Barrington corner the market on illegal boozing.

Rich parents have rich kids who feel rules do not apply to them. These kids are on their way to their MBAs.
