List of Governor Carcieri's 25 vetoes issued Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Carcieri announced Tuesday that he has vetoed 25 of the scores of bills passed by lawmakers in their two-day special session at the end of October.

Last week, the governor announced the veto of a fee for saltwater fishing licenses. It's possible he may issue more vetoes.

Here is the governor's list of bills most recently vetoed, linked to his messages explaining his reasons for doing so:

Senate Bill No.195 SUB B, by Perry, Jabour, Miller, Levesque C, Pichardo
ENTITLED, AN ACT RELATING TO BUSINESSES AND PROFESSIONS -- FUNERAL DIRECTOR/EMBALMER FUNERAL SERVICE ESTABLISHMENTS (would define "domestic partner" for the purpose of granting authority to domestic partners of deceased for funeral arrangements of deceased.)

What gives Westerly's representatives the right to force the state to open a DMV branch 3 days a week when last years budget clearly defind the need to eliminate two branches. DMV branches are not a priority. Let's look at the big picture please.

By vetoing both the DMV office in Westerly and the RI saltwater fishing license, the governor has reduced small expenditures for the state at large expenses to Westerly residents. Both veto's are essentially increased taxes for all Westerly residents. Then he wonders why the brain drain that's strangling the RI economy? Penny wise and pound foolish no matter how you look at it.
