PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man shot in the torso was treated at Rhode Island Hospital after people found him staggering near a restaurant on Allens Avenue around 12:40 a.m., according to the police. Obiwan Perez, 28, of 1346 Eddy St., was in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Capt. James Desmarais of the Providence police. Desmarais said that people outside the Cactus Grill Restaurant saw Perez staggering near a car and at first thought he was drunk but soon found out he had been shot. Some witnesses said that he may have gotten out of the vehicle, and there may have been other people around him, but no one was there when police arrived, Desmarais said. A Rhode Island Hospital spokeswoman confirmed that Perez was in serious condition Friday morning. -- With reports from Journal staff writer Tatiana Pina
