WARWICK, R.I. -- A dozen protesters from Mobilization for Healthcare.org occupied the lobby of UnitedHealthcare of New England Wednesday, demanding to know whether the organization would cover the cost of a bone marrow transplant for Robert Darling, one of its members.

Darling said he has waited five years for an answer to that question.

"I'm here to get arrested," said Darling, 59, of West Warwick. "I've been waiting five years for United Healthcare to call me back" and say whether he was covered.

"I've got cancer," he said. Darling said his weight dropped from 180 pounds to 132 pounds three years ago. He got a bone-marrow transplant, he said, but it was under a government-funded program.

Debora Spano, director of public relations for UnitedHealthcare, told Darling that they couldn't find his file. She also said that the company officers the protesters wanted to speak with were not available.

Among the demands of the group were that United Healthcare stop denying care, stop "stonewalling" health care reform and begin reducing rates.

Spano said in a statement that United Healthcare is "committed to ensuring all Americans have access to quality health care, a goal that requires hard work, not publicity stunts."

Ummm...maybe the company officers should make themselves available? Nice message, 'we're too busy to bother with you customers...'

"Can't find his file" ?? Debra Spano is the poster child for an uncaring healthcare system. I am sure United is very proud of their employee for her handling of the situation. Debra Spano needs to be fired immediately.

"Can't find the file." Isn't that convenient! Insurers surely can find their files when their customers need to pay their premiums.

Their performance is exactly why there is a move towards governmental health care programs. United Healthcare is shooting themselves in the foot! I personally favor private health care but here is an example of a private health care provider neglecting a patient, from my point of view.

Innocent until proven guilty...Does he really have a file?

Do a little homework before you start to point fingers - you'll actually sound intelligent :)

Now you know why Unions didn't want them and preferred Blue Cross.Imagine that being someone you know personally and having to go through that while battling cancer.Enough said.

He had to ask if he was covered? He couldn't read the policy to see? He couldn't bring it to the HR department or shop steward or a lawyer to figure out? Lots of press today for some leftist group (google them, people) ...the retraction will be on pg 999 six months from now. You people are so gullible its no wonder we're in the mess we're in.

had Blue Cross and had gone through the the checkup for a lapband as I weighted 350lbs and had tried all the kinds of diets. Employer switched to United and had to start all over again took five years to get approval from United - one year after surgery I'm 130 lbs lighter and shrinking; and health is getting better.

Joe K, out of the three people that you've listed there the most likely to be able to tell him if he is covered might be the lawyer. HR??? they would have the standard anwer. Call your provider. HR isn't up on your policy!!! All they know is that you're covered or not. A shop steward??? You've got to be kidding me with that!!! Why should he have to pay a lawyer to get an answer about his health care??? THE FREAKIN" PROVIDER SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL HIM IF HE IS COVERED!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the least they could do. What are you and UHC employee???

I feel for Mr. Darling but not everyone is entitled to a bone marrow transplant. It's still a relatively experimental procedure that often does not work, especially in someone his age. It's much more successful in younger candidates. Should United, or any health care company for that matter, shell out money simply because an irate patient demands it? The health care community needs to be more selective about who receives treatment and not cave to Darling's terrorist tactics.

I love the statement made by United.
Healthcare is a human right, not a publicity stunt.
Should an executive's house go on fire,I see no reason why anyone but the person himself should be responsible for putting it out.
Maybe the fire started somewhere which would not have been caused if for the sake of "personal responsibility"

United is the Worst said:

I cannot forget years ago when we were forced to switch from Blue Cross to United Health. We were told at the time that we would "get the same coverage that Blue Cross provided". We had heard the stories about United, we knew this was a downright lie. Since then, I have had to change doctors for certain ailments because the doctors refuse to deal with United's payment methods (never pay on time). I can remember one doctory's secretary telling me "they NEVER pay".

I think it is terrible this has gone on for five years. I wonder how much this poor man has paid in those five years for United's Health Care. Yet they refuse to even talk to him.

Isn't that what a GOOD health care coverage is for--to help you through times like these. The man deserves an answer, his life depends on it.
