Update: North Smithfield police seek carjacked Subaru

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. - A vehicle that was carjacked on a rural highway off-ramp Tuesday night is still missing, the North Smithfield police say.

The local department has issued an automated message to all police departments in New England about the carjacking at the end of the Route 146 northbound off-ramp at Pound Hill Road, Capt. Tom R. Lafleur said Wednesday morning. The police continue to investigate and are working with the victim of the carjacking in the hopes they can develop a sketch of the suspect, Lafleur said.

Patrol cars responded to the area when a 27-year-old Pascoag man called 911 Tuesday around 7:35 p.m. to say his car had been taken after a suspect broke into his driver's-side window and demanded he exit the vehicle.

Seth Desjarlais, who lives in the Burrillville village of Pascoag, told the police that while he was stopped and about to turn left from the Route 146 off-ramp a man approached his vehicle from the woods, smashed his window and demanded Desjarlais get out of the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX station wagon he was driving, according to a statement issued by Lafleur.

Lafleur said Wednesday afternoon that the car Desjarlais was driving was registered to Sara Malouin of Pascoag. He was driving it with the owner's permission, Lafleur said.

Desjarlais told the police he saw a silver-colored revolver in the man's hand, Lafleur said in the statement. Desjarlais was not injured during the confrontation, Lafleur said.

Desjarlais got out of the blue Subaru, which carries the Rhode Island license plate VQ-475. The man then sped off in the Subaru, onto Route 146 North, towards Uxbridge, Mass., followed by a dark-colored Ford F-150 that Desjarlais described to the police as a late 1990s or early 2000 model, according to Lafleur. Both vehicles entered the highway at a high rate of speed, the police said.

Desjarlais described the suspect as a 6-foot-tall male of medium build, with short brown hair and a goatee. He was wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt.

Lafleur said carjacking is not a frequent crime in North Smithfield and he doesn't know when someone was last carjacked in town. He said the rural nature of the area made the off-ramp a good target, though.

"It's remote. It's dark," he said. "It certainly makes it an excellent location to commit these kinds of crimes."

Assuming the facts of this case are true, it illustrates another good reason to allow concealed carry for law-abiding citizens. Why people want to sit back and continually be a victim is beyond me. The carjacker could just as easily killed the car owner to eliminate an eyewitness.

Sounds like a setup to me. I'll bet you we will find out it was not a random act.

I live over near there....very very very dark at the bottom of that ramp, no street lights what so ever. When it's dark out you can't see your hand in front of your face, never mind someone walking toward your car from the rear or the side unless they are in your headlights. I would hope that if something like that happened to me that i would think first, scream later and put the peddle to the metal.

Unless the NSPD would like to provide 24/7 surveillance to the neighborhood, I would suggest we NOT advertise how "dark & remote" the area is!!!

Memo to Bogey_Jim: Like the rest of you libs, you resort to giving out nothing but insulting responses to common reason. How about an coherent, logical response? Too difficult, huh? Even in your liberal heaven called Vermont, everyone is allowed to conceal carry - EVERYONE. Even people like you. Imagine that. And I don't see where people are running around willy-nilly shooting at each other over cups of coffee and putting their eyes out. Then again, we haven't seen you trying to shoot at something...

Reason for concealed weapons??
That makes little sense. So you will carry a loaded weapon at all times on your person - even while driving along this type of road... ALWAYS at the ready for random attacks (Assuming this is not a hoax incident).
And how would you be reacting, practically speaking, to someone who suddenly rushes up and smashes your window out of the dark like that? The person already HAS a weapon supposedly visible. You would then be able to what - quick-draw against this assailant?
Please.....this is all logical.

To Kying: That is correct. I'd like the opportunity to carry the weapon and at least have a fighting chance. What's the alternative? Leave your life at the mercy of a criminal who doesn't care about you? Not me...no thanks. If there were no violent crime, then fine. But there is violent crime and it's rampant in some areas. Some people I know live in very bad areas (Springfield, MA, Hartford, CT, etc.) where they fear for their safety day in and day out. Why should criminals be able to control the streets like that? The police are powerless and can't do it all. Give the victims a fighting chance.
