SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Nancy A. Nettik, principal of the West Kingston Elementary School, has been named Rhode Island's National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Nettik has led the West Kingston Elementary School through a dramatic transition that began in 2005, when the South Road School closed and children living in a low-income housing project were shifted to her building, doubling the proportion of disadvantaged enrollment to 17 percent. To bridge gaps between home and school, Nettik added "wrap-around" programs to extend instructional time and provide child care for kindergarten students. She also has put into place a family engagement team, a family outreach coordinator, and other supports for student achievement, according to the NAESP. Nettik, who has a bachelor's degree from Western Montana College and a master's degree from Montana State University, also has worked as a school principal in Montana. She said, "We work hard to provide the appropriate learning experience for each child" in a very diverse population. The organization will honor Nettik and 62 other school principals from across the nation at an awards bankquet in Washington on Oct. 23. |
