PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A driver who allegedly fled the scene of an accident early Sunday with a seriously injured victim lodged in his windshield was arraigned Monday morning in District Court and was ordered held pending an appearance in Superior Court. Christopher Swiridowsky, 30, of 28 Lynch St., entered no plea before Judge Michael A. Higgins to charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, and of eluding police. The police say Swiridowsky slammed into people who had gotten out of their cars on Route 95 to inspect their vehicles after a collision just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday near the Branch Avenue overpass on Route 95 south. The police say one of those people -- Jose Flores, 24, of 225 Hunt St., Central Falls -- was impaled in the Swiridowsky's car windshield and remained there as Swiridowsky fled the scene. A witness followed and called the police. Higgins set bail at $25,000, but ordered Swiridowsky held as a probation violator in an unrelated case in Superior Court. Swiridowsky was to make an appearance Monday afternoon in Superior Court. Meanwhile, the state police have identified the third person injured in the crash. Efron Trinidad, 28, of 578 Hunt St., third floor, Central Falls, was critically injured when Swiridowsky's vehicle hit him, according to State Police Capt. Kenneth Marandola. Trinidad remains unconscious at Rhode Island Hospital Monday morning, Marandola said. The other victim was injured after Swiridowsky struck his car, pushing it into him. That man -- Michael Abrames, 33, of 86 Beverly Rd. East Providence -- was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and released, the police said. A Rhode Island Hospital spokeswoman said Monday morning that Flores is in serious condition. The Providence Journal has been following this story today as it develops. A film, based on another similar story. The movie also takes place in Providence (though filmed in Canada).

On our way home from Maine yesterday, we came upon the s-curves in Pawtucket. All around us, in heavy traffic, were cars racing each other from lane-to-lane at a high rate of speed. We couldn't believe what we were witnessing. It was so utterly dangerous, right up to the Route 10 exit in Cranston. It was terrifying. Where are the unmarked police cars or any kind of policing of the area? Is it any wonder this kind of thing happens? And with us, it was just after dark. Where are these people coming from?

Just how far did this guy get with a body sticking out of his windshield, and how did he get caught?
Very disturbing incident; how in the hell do you drive away from an accident scene with a body sticking through your windshield????

Onwatch, the people you saw driving like jerks are most likely people under the influence. the great lie in RI, the great secret, the great taboo, is that many many people have an alcohol problem in this state and routinely get behind the wheel of a car. it appears the authorities have given up trying to control the situation - probably because the cars outnumber their ability to handle it. yes, it is frightening to drive on 95 in RI. something must be done.

On watch.
In case you didn't notice, the state is dead broke. The men and women of the State Police would like nothing better than to catch these jerks on the highway but the sad truth is, there way under staffed. Maybe you should contact the Governor's office and have him personally do a ride along on a weekend with these guys. You may think it's frustrating from your position but imagine the frustration they feel.

I actually know Chris. He is a nice guy. Some would call him a teddy bear. I can't say this is the brightest thing he has ever done. He probably just panicked. I know he has to be regreting this now and he must feel terrible for what he has done. If he was as evil as the media makes him out to be, would he have hidden in a closet? Like I said; it was not a wise idea and he will pay for it. He was acting stupid and wreckless, but he is not evil. He was not drunk or under any influence. The driving conditions were terrible. I think if we should learn anything from this, it would be to stay off the road when the conditions are this terrible. Get off the highway and try to wait it out. It has ruined 4 people's life on Sunday night. Let us pray for them all.

He is a nice guy?? Did you really just say that.
He has warrents for his arrest involving drugs and embezzlement .
I was one of the people hit that night. My car was in the breakdown lane partially in the highspeed lane..traffic was stopping everywhere, clearly there was an accident..he came down the highspeed lane doing 75mph past stopped cars and stuck my car and spun it around like a top, hitting me, sending me flying into the barrier, I'm beat up very bad and have been out of work since trying to recover but the other two poor men that he hit lives are changed forever, one may not make it still!! hes a nice guy?? He's an irresponsible low life who nearly killed three people and kept driving and you're making excuses for him??? He's not a nice guy. Tell the family of the other two men, one still unconcious what a nice guy he is, I'm sure they wanna hear it.
