The opening of the last segment of the much-touted Iway, from Route 195 West to Route 95 North, as well as of a pair of new Point Street off-ramps, are set to be the high points of a busy week for highway construction in Rhode Island. Several other changes are planned as well.

Traffic Pattern Changes

Providence: RIDOT will open a new ramp from I-195 West to I-95 North, permanently closing old I-195, on Thursday morning. Access will be allowed to Exit 2 (South Main Street.). New ramp to Exit 1A (Point St.) also opening on Thursday. See www.dot.ri.gov for more information.

Providence: RIDOT will open another new Point Street ramp, Exit 20 from I-95 North, on Tuesday. This ramp, about ¼ mile after Exit 19 (I-195), provides increased access to the Jewelry District, Downcity and the hospitals area.

Providence: I-95 SB, after Exit 21 (Atwells Ave.): there is a new traffic pattern with two lane splits.
• Split 1: At the Broad Street overpass, with two lanes to the left for I-95 SB and two lanes to the right for Exit 20 and I-195 EB. Hospital traffic should stay left to continue on I-95 SB. RIDOT expects to open a third lane for I-95 SB later in the week. Until then, expect heavy congestion at rush hour.
• Split 2: At the Point Street overpass, one lane to the left and two lanes to the right of the split. All lanes continue on I-95 SB but motorists must move into the right lane to access the hospital complex at Exit 19 (Eddy St.).
The lane splits will be removed by the end of the year. Additional changes in this traffic will be announced in advance.

Providence: I-95 NB, after Exit 19 (I-195), a new traffic pattern is in place. All lanes shift to the left, and then split with two lanes to the left and one lane to the right of the split. All lanes continue on I-95 NB but motorists must stay right to access Exit 21 (Broadway). The pattern will be removed on Thursday.

I can't exactly figure out the patterns intended but if there are only two effective lanes for through traffic (traffic that does not wish to interface with Providence) and they have to shift lanes once or twice as, say, they make their way from Massachusetts I95 to I95 south of Providence I fear a minor disaster. As engineers remind us the "throttle points" are what determines the average speed of the transit. As you come from Pawtucket and head to Warwick there used to be a minimum of three effective lanes for through traffic. Has it been reduced to two?
