The two lane splits on Route 95 in downtown Providence that began last week are still the big news in the Rhode Island Department of Transportation's weekly traffic report.

New Traffic Patterns

Providence: I-95 SB, after Exit 21 (Atwells Ave.), there is a new traffic pattern with two lane splits:
• Split 1: At the Broad Street overpass, with two lanes to the left for I-95 SB and two lanes to the right for Exit 20 and I-195 EB. Hospital traffic should stay left to continue on I-95 SB. For one week, there will be one less lane on I-95 SB. Expect heavy congestion at rush hour.
• Split 2: At the Point Street overpass, one lane to the left and two lanes to the right of the split. All lanes continue on I-95 SB but motorists must move into the right lane to access the hospital complex at Exit 19 (Eddy St.).

The lane splits will be removed by the end of the year. Additional changes in this traffic pattern will be announced in advance.

Another split

Providence: I-95 NB, after Exit 19 (I-195), a new traffic pattern is in place. All lanes shift to the left, and then split with two lanes to the left and one lane to the right of the split. All lanes continue on I-95 NB but motorists must stay right to access Exit 21 (Broadway). The pattern will be in place until late October/early November.
