By KARL RITTER and MATT MOORE
The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president. Speculation had focused on Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a Colombian senator and a Chinese dissident, along with an Afghan woman's rights activist. The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage. The plaudit appeared to be a slap at President George W. Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for resorting to largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change. "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said. "In the past year Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations." He added that the committee endorsed "Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'" President Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. The committee chairman said after awarding the 2002 prize to former Democratic President Jimmy Carter, for his mediation in international conflicts, that it should be seen as a "kick in the leg" to the Bush administration's hard line in the buildup to the Iraq war. Five years later, the committee honored Bush's adversary in the 2000 presidential election, Al Gore, for his campaign to raise awareness about global warming. The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize though it was not immediately apparent who nominated Obama. "The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given too someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said. Nominators include former laureates; current and former members of the committee and their staff; members of national governments and legislatures; university professors of law, theology, social sciences, history and philosophy; leaders of peace research and foreign affairs institutes; and members of international courts of law. The Nelson Mandela Foundation welcomed the award on behalf of its founder Nelson Mandela, who shared the 1993 Peace Prize with then-South African President F.W. DeKlerk for their efforts at ending years of apartheid and laying the groundwork for a democratic country. "We trust that this award will strengthen his commitment, as the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, to continue promoting peace and the eradication of poverty," the foundation said. In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses." Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, he said the peace prize should be given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Sweden and Norway were united under the same crown at the time of Nobel's death. The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change. --- Associated Press Writer Ian MacDougall contributed to this report. This is ridiculous. The award is supposed to go to an individual who has done the "most and best work." Obama has done little, if anything, except talk. Maybe this award is for the much publicized "beer summit."

Well, this award just highlights the bankruptcy of the Nobel Committee, as if awarding one to Gore for his fraudulent PowerPoint presentation hadn't already done so.

The Nobel Committee has proven itself over the last several years to have all the credibility of other liberal organizations such as CodePink, MoveOne.Org and the Democratic Party. Not to mention their obvious distaste for the US. Why else do only the weakest and most ineffectual Americans win their 'prizes'? Al Gore? Jimmy Carter? Obama is in the right company.

There truly is a sense of humor in politics. During the same year that Barack Obama appoints a NAMBLA member to be the "SAFE School Czar", a comedy group selects him as the Nobel prize winner.
The EGO soars again.
I hope he thanks them for rescuing him from the Olympic committee.
I pray that at some point in the future the Nobel prize committee will once again become noble.
Thank you for this opportunity to express my opinion.

this is a joke, the only thing it dose is cheapen the nobel peace prize.a prize given for what he might do? the should stay at home and try to do something for us.

What a joke. This prize was once held in high esteem. Now it has become a meaningless gesture.

The Nobel Peace Prize means nothing to me anymore!
"Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit."
Well, why not give the Nobel Prize for Medicine to someone who is working towards a cure for cancer but has not accomplished anything yet? How about giving the Nobel prize for Literature to someone trying to write the greatest book ever written but who has not finished th first chapter. If president Obama's ideas fail, will he lose his Nobel Peace Prize?
Keep in mind that Al Gore beat out Irena Sendler. An unfamiliar name to most people, but this woman defied the Nazis and saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She sneaked the children out between 1942 and 1943 to safe hiding places and found non-Jewish families to adopt them.
The current Nobel Peace Prize committee is ruining the value of the honor of being awarded this prize.

A joke for sure...Obama is a joke, too!

I guess all you have to do is be a wimp and apologize to all the world leaders and buckle under to Russia and eliminate a missle defense program. Wow, the requirements are getting pretty tough. Thank God Al Gore won it with his global warming garbage before june and july came with 45 degree weather.

Sour grapes!! Yes the rest of the world applauds the man who represents Hope. All of his initiatives have been recognized as nobel. As for Gore and Carter, they are a sharp contrast to the "Mission Accomplished" buffoon whose lack of wisdom put us in this mess in Iraq and Afghanistan. If they are not your sons and daughters who are maimed or killed, it is so easy to decry the Peace award and our President's careful examination of what a good strategy should be. Yes, he deserves the award for his courageous stands. Maybe the world will be a better place because of Barack Obama.

I would like to be given the Nobel Prize for Literature, as I am going to write a book someday.
Cheapens the award. Ghandi did not win the NPP!

RICRIS.. NOTHING TO ADD. YOUR RIGHT ON TARGET.
ALSO, NOTE, EVERY COMMENT OPPOSED OBAMA. AND HARDLY ANYONE CALLS HIM "PRESIDENT" OBAMA.

Oh boy, it seems like the righties are all upset about this one.

How can he win this prize when voting ended on February 1st? Just more politics on a global level.

Lighten-Up Right-WingNuts its just an award,

It is a shame that one of the most prestigious awards in the world has turned into little more than political propaganda. The nominations for the peace prize were closed 12 days after Obama took office. Surely there were individuals with a long history of accomplishments that are more deserving. I guess according to the Nobel committee, all it takes is a "Hope and Change" speech and a little Kool Aide.
Isn't it ironic that on the eve of deciding whether or not to send an additional 40-60K troops to Afghanistan, Obama receives the Nobel Prize for Peace.

YO BARACK, I’M REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU AND I’MA LET YOU FINISH YOUR PRESIDENCY, BUT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WAS THE BEST NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER OF ALL TIME!!

I thought Albert Pujols should have gotten it. He's had a much better year than Barack Insane Obama.
Dave Letterman would have gotten it, but instead of spreading piece, he kept it all for himself.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize? Really? What...Pee-Wee Herman wasn't available?

Boo Hoo Righties! Well since it's such a nothing award, I expect to see each of you with one ok? Keep it up haters, we are all laughing at your "foot-stomping hissy fits". Poor little repub white men....(I'm white too, just in case you have something to say about that)
Carolyn 9:59am I couldn't have said it better myself! Congratulations to President Obama, apparently the world sees something in you then a handfull of whiny, racist morons!!

This is the biggest joke of the year. I guess all you have to do is shove anti-American values down the throats of Americans and associate yourself with ACORN and Bill Ayers and that gets you a Nobel Peace prize.
Pretty soon you will be able to purchase Nobel Peace prizes over the internet for $199.99 on sale.

This is like giving the MVP award to a player after two weeks into the season. A real joke, not a surprise, he should be ashamed to accept it.

This is just another example of Affirmitive Action, on an international level.

Three Questions:
1: When will The Great One part the sea?
2: What will The Great One do with the $1.4 Million (put it towards his healthcare plan)?
3: What has The Great One actually DONE in 10 months? Please list at least three ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Beer summits do not count. Oh, by the way, unemployment has ticked UPWARDS.

Be careful what you say, if you oppose Obama getting the award then yiou are a terrorist - “The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists – the Taliban and Hamas this morning – in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse said in a statement

CJ...
No one here is whining. They are expressing their opinions about an award that seems highly underserved.
If voting ended 12 days after he became President Obama, then what on Earth did he do to deserve this? Oh wait... you don't have to DO anything to win this award anymore. While his approach to peace may be admirable in your eyes, his efforts haven't actually done the world any good yet.
Why do you feel the need to post insults and call names? It sounds to me like you're the "hater".

Why stop at canonization? Let's go for full deification. The UN can call for a convocation of all the major and minor religions(can't leave the animists of Kenya out of this). What better way to bring the world together than to have a world unifying religion! As under Roman rule, local populations would still be allowed to worship their traditional god(s) in addition to the new God-Caesar. Pax-Obama. The world enters a new golden age.

What does the Prime Minister mean "The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given too someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said. Every leader has the power to CONTRIBUTE to Peace! That doesn't mean they will or will be successful, honest, and nobel in their efforts. I thought this award for those who actually did it. Is it also correct he had been in office only 10 days when this was finalized? I remember when I was in grade school and thinking what an amazing honor this was and how incredible you had to be to earn it. I guess I over estimated it.

Just imagine, the deadline for submitting nominations was February....
Check it out yourself on the NPP website:

How long had he been in office?
One wonders WHO nominated him? And for what!!!
What a farce!!!

I'm far from a "hater" I'm just reading most of the posts here...yes, whiny. Even President Obama is shocked by this and has accepted it in a humble and classy manner. How soon we all forget our 8 years of misery huh? He was given this award for all his efforts in trying to unite the international community and apparently parts of the world feel that he's really putting an effort forward in that. He's been our president for 10 months and most of these posters expect miracles. What a joke! No one is asking for a miracle from him...but he sure beats the village idiot we were forced to endure for 8 years!! Again, congratulations President Obama...at least you work tirelessly for us...

All those here criticizing and snarking on what should be a proud US moment: hey! You're in good company! On YOUR team are the Taliban - they also disapprove. Good job! Good company you keep!
The level of hatred here and elsewhere is amazing. I wonder why??
He's criticized for welcoming kids back to school with a video on working hard and doing well.
He's criticized for trying to get a summer olympics in the US.
He's criticized for winning a NOBEL PRIZE! That even HE'S surprised at, so he dedicates it instead to the American People. Which includes all you cynical children out there who think you know it all, but understand nothing. Too bad for you. Enjoy your sour grapes. I'm proud to be an American and proud of our President; a shame that you're not.

What's the controversy? Obama is lifting up an age-old vision laid out by the Hebrew prophets and the Gospels -- that of beating swords into plowshares, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and being good stewards of the earth. Obama is simply the messenger, calling us to pursue that vision. It's the vision that's been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

This is a good thing. Now the rest of the world will realize that Mr. Obama is an empty suit with a designer vocabulary and a used car salesman's credibility. A vote for The Bammer was indeed cash for a clunker. Never again, thank God.

This again shows us that the biggest problem is all the negative people out there. First the President of the United States can not talk to the children of OUR country, now he is not good enough to work to bring the DREAM of PEACE to the the world. Rome (USA) is not burning, the negative people are destroying it. Wake up, remember LOVE - Honor - Peace. Next thing these negative people will say "MOM" is a bad thing, we should all work for a better world not destroy the place we all live.

Way too much....way too soon, with really not an awful lot to show for having been awarded such lofty recognition!
Actually...it just cheapened, substantially, what the Nobel peace prize Award stands for and what one should have accomplished to EARN it!
This time around...it was not earned! There had to have been an ulterior motive for this decision??
Politcal Correctness of some kind.....run amuck??

So much for credibility. The man's batting 1000 on absolutely nothing unless you consider television star. O'Bama voters got what they asked for, no substance, much bool pucky.
