PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Considering a career in public service? Or are you simply a political junkie?

Head over to Rhode Island College Oct. 25-27 for a chance to rub elbows with former Congress members Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-Calif., 1969-1984) and Beverly Byron (D-Md., 1978-1992). Also there: political analyst Jennifer Duffy, a native Rhode Islander and senior editor for The Cook Political Report, who will deliver the keynote address of the college's "Congress to Campus" program.

Created in 1976 by the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, the bipartisan program seeks to educate students on American government, politics and public affairs.

A local media panel will discuss politics in real time.

Among the forums that Rhode Island College is sponsoring, "All in the Family: Our Greatest Political Legacies," which will be held Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Alger Hall 110.

Goldwater and his father -- the late former Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, who was the Republican nominee for president in 1964 but lost in a landslide to Lyndon B. Johnson -- represent one of the few instances in U.S. history when both father and son served in Congress simultaneously.

Goldwater and Byron -- wife of the late Rep. Goodloe E. Byron, U.S. representative from Maryland -- will join elected officials from Rhode Island's political families to discuss the connection between civic service and family ties.

Providence Municipal Court Judge Frank Caprio will moderate the panel.

Panelists include former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, son of the late former Sen. John H. Chafee; former Lt. Gov. Richard Licht, nephew of the late former Gov. Frank Licht; and State Treasurer Frank T. Caprio, son of the judge who will moderate the panel, and brother of state Rep. David Caprio.

On Oct. 26 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Duffy, Goldwater and Byron will participate in "Bipartisanship and Governing," which will be also held in Alger Hall 110.

Immediately after the forum, Duffy will deliver the program's keynote address.

Duffy covers the U.S. Senate and governors races for the Cook Report. She has also appeared on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, PBS' "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," and C-SPAN's Washington Journal.

And on Oct. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m., local political reporters will participate in "Real Time at RIC," a political discussion modeled after the HBO series starring political humorist Bill Maher -- where no topic or comment is off limits .

Veteran investigative reporter Jim Hummel, of The Hummel Report, will host the panel discussion. Joining him will be NBC-10 political reporter Bill Rappleye, Scott MacKay of WRNI Radio, and Jim Baron of the Woonsocket Call.
