By Bruce Landis PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A federal mediator has joined Brown University and its food service employees as they continue to negotiate a new contract, said Mark Nickel, Brown's director of university communications. The current contract expires at midnight. Local 615 of the Service Employees' International Union represents about 180 workers, including cooks, bakers, and fry cooks. "Pretty much everything in the food service area," said Nickel. Nickel said he was not familiar with the details of the negotiations. Union officials couldn't be reached Wednesday. Even without the food service workers, Nickel said, "we would have continuity of food service to students." He said, however, that Brown might have to close some of its smaller dining facilities. Nickel said the food service workers are paid comparably to people in similar jobs in this area and in the rest of the Ivy League. |
