Three research vessels will ply Rhode Island's coastal waters this month to gather information for the planned $1.5 billion wind turbine farm that Governor Carcieri wants to develop offshore. The NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson has been doing surveys between Block Island and the south shore. It is part of a fleet of research and survey vessels operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The research vessel Bold, operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is also doing fisheries and physical oceanographic research, and will be available for public touring Monday at the University of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay campus. Finally, the research vessel Endeavor, homeported at URI, plans two five-day cruises later this month. All three vessels are supplying data for an unprecedented ocean mapping program by the state's Coastal Resources Management Council to plan for the best location for the wind farm.
