NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Two people were displaced in a morning fire that occurred at a single-family house at 375 Saint Paul St., according to Joel Jillson, fire chief for North Smithfield Fire and Rescue. At 10:28 a.m. the fire department received calls reporting smoke coming from the house. The couple who lives there was not at home at the time, Jillson said. Jillson said one firefighter suffered a minor cut to his hand during the fire. The house is adjacent to the North Smithfield Fence Co., which owns the house and property it's on, Jillson said. Jillson said that the fire was contained to the attic and within 35 to 40 minutes was under control and extinguished. He said that although fire officials believe the origin of the fire to be centered around the attic, they are still trying to determine where the fire began and what caused it. The house sustained substantial fire and smoke damage and is uninhabitable, Jillson said. The fire department called the Rhode Island Red Cross to assist the couple with housing arrangements. |
