R.I. Democrats call Carcieri 'sectarian extremist'

The Rhode Island Democratic Party this afternoon joined a gay-rights group in urging Governor Carcieri to cancel plans to headline a fundraising banquet for the Massachusetts Family Institute, an advocacy organization that considers homosexuality "an unhealthy practice and destructive to individuals, families and society."

Party Chairman William Lynch said that the governor should "immediately withdraw his agreement to speak at the event and apologize to the thousands of gay and lesbian Rhode Islanders, and their families, who stand to be offended by his callous appeasement of this ultra-conservative organization," according to a statement issued late Tuesday afternoon.

Carcieri, a Republican, has accepted an invitation to serve as the keynote speaker for the Family Institute's 18th Annual Fundraising Banquet, a $50-a-head event scheduled for the night of Oct. 15 in Newton, Mass.

Carcieri was asked to share "his beliefs and values on traditional marriage," and would confine his remarks to that subject, according to the governor's spokeswoman Amy Kempe.

When asked to comment on the group's position on homosexuality, Kempe responded: "I haven't asked him if he has considered all of their positions, so I don't feel comfortable answering without talking to him."

Carcieri was not available Tuesday evening to clarify his position. A message left with Family Institute president Kris Mineau was not returned.

The Family Institute Web site outlines its position on various issues ranging from abortion to pornography. On "human sexuality," its published position reads:

"MFI does not consider homosexual behavior to be merely an alternate lifestyle or sexual 'preference'; it is an unhealthy practice and destructive to individuals, families and society. Our compassion for those plagued by same-sex attraction compels us to support the healing of those who wish to change their behavior."

It continues: "MFI strongly opposes any efforts by political activists to normalize homosexual behavior and all attempts to equate homosexuality with benign characteristics such as skin color, or the 'gay rights' movement with the civil rights movement."

The newly formed advocacy group Queer Action of Rhode Island sent a letter to the governor's office dated Aug. 29 asking him to cancel the appearance. On Monday, Kempe said the governor had no plans to back out. This afternoon, she said the same thing following the release of Lynch's statement.

"At this point, the governor intends to honor his commitment and speak at the annual dinner," Kempe said.

Lynch blasted the decision:

"For the governor to support a group that believes gay and lesbian Rhode Islanders are not normal, hard-working, taxpayers proves that he is a sectarian extremist who, now in the waning days of his administration, seeks to fan the flames of intolerance in a desperate attempt to appear relevant again," he said.

"As if a tanking economy and record high unemployment weren't enough, now Rhode Islanders have one more reason to be ashamed of and disappointed in their governor."

Bill Lynch is calling Carcieri names---is Billy still just eight years old?

To call the Governor of our state a "sectarian extremist" can only be met by labeling Lynch and his Democrats that have run this state for more than 40 years as "economic child abusers" for their continuing destruction of the state through over-spending and insane policies that have put the onus of a huge future tax bill on my children and grand children. Their abuse of the future of our children and our beloved state is absolutely unconscionable.

Gov. Carcieri is such a close-minded bigot, he has never sought dialogue with the gay community, never sought engagement with the gay community and certainly never sought to understand the gay community. His latest actions show that not only is Gov. Carcieri a bigot, but he is an unabashed bigot who has no interest in learning about something in which he has no knowledge. Shame on him.

This is so typical of Billy Lynch!

Because of his distain for the Governor and that fact that he has a lesbien sister, he has to go on the attack against the Governor for attending a family values event!

The Lynch brother's act is really getting old!

Using his own words, Mr. Lynch is displaying a "desperate attempt to be relevant." This is a gross mischaracterization of the Governor's acceptance of this speaking engagement. If we held every politician accountable for all of the views and acts of every organization that they speak in front of, not one would be able to achieve re-election. This is just another partisan jab, in the unhealthy dialogue that has become the political landscape today. Governer Carcieri is a decent man who happens to believe that families are stronger when there are "traditional" parental units. It his his right to espose that belief and speak about it. If someone is offended, they have every right not to vote, or support him. Unfortunately Mr. Lynch has chosen to politicize and belittle the Governor's views, ecause it is politically expedient. Sadly, it makes Mr. Lynch look like a boy playing a man's game. He has enough turmoil in his own life to worry about, so this deflection techniquie is rather trite and obvious.

If only politicians would all step up and spend this much time and effort on the things that really matter to constituents, like our safety and financial security.

God Bless America, we need it!!

I find it repugnant that a governor would align himself with a homophobic organization (aka hate group) such as the Massachusetts Family Institute. Their views on gay people are 50 years out-of-date: "MFI does not consider homosexual behavior to be merely an alternate lifestyle or sexual 'preference'" Anyone with the least bit of common sense knows that a person's sexual orientation is not a lifestyle or preference. Apparently the governor is lacking common sense or common decency.

It might be interesting to see what history says about Carcieri 25 years from now. Assuming he's mentioned at all.

Thomas, the NAZIS were against gay marriage too, so according to your logic, it would be perfectly acceptable for Carcieri to give a speech for them as long as he sticks to his "stance" on traditional marriage. This group is not just against gay marraige, but against gay rights and gay people in general; they want gay people locked up in re-programming "rehab" centers like the criminally insane, for crissake! Your assertion is absurd.

Dear Governor Carcieri:

I applaud you for accepting the invitation to speak at the Massachusetts Family Institute banquet.

Thank you for having the courage to stand up and speak your mind. We need more politicians with your courage to stand up for what is right in God's eyes not in the eyes of this crazy world we now live in.

People are trying to re-do the basics of God's creation to suite there own needs. It's time to stop all this craziness of killing babies and same sex marriages; and return to nature the way God intended it to be.

Sincerely,
Marge Pike
