NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The north and southbound lanes in one section of Route 146 will be closed for five nights, starting Sunday, for demolition of the 50-year-old Great Road Bridge. The state Department of Transportation announced that the Forestdale/Slatersville exit will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and motorists will be detoured off and onto the highway. Those traveling northbound can exit on School Street and return to the highway after the bridge, while those driving the southbound lanes can exit at Great Road and get back on the highway after the Great Road Bridge. The Great Road Bridge carries Route 146A (Great Road) over Route 146 in North Smithfield. The bridge is being demolished as part of a bridge replacement project. Construction began in 2007 and the project is slated for completion next year. |
