The tall ship Unicorn, which grounded on rocks Wednesday morning about 400 yards off Nonamesset Island in the Elizabeth Islands chain, just off Martha's Vineyard, has been freed, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday afternoon. The Coast Guard said the ship was refloated with the assistance of the commercial tug Jaguar. The Coast Guard said the 118-foot Unicorn carried a crew of six and 10 passengers, all of whom are safe. There is no word on damage. The Coast Guard said in a news release that there is no sign of any oil spill, but that commercial divers would inspect the hull. The Unicorn's crew contacted the Coast Guard at 10:30 a.m., reporting they needed assistance. Two 41-foot boats from the station arrived at 10:35 a.m., to begin removing people from the ship. The Coast Guard said the six members of the crew elected to remain aboard, while the passengers were taken off. The Coast Guard said the plan is to bring the passengers back to Station Woods Hole, Mass., but said this decision is subject to change. The cause of the incident is not yet known. The Unicorn claims to be the only all-female-crewed tall ship in the world. According to the Unicorn's Web site, the ship was operating under a program called Sisters Under Sail, with plans to sail the East Coast from Baltimore to Nova Scotia from June to August. The Coast Guard said that besides the crew members, there were nine minors and one chaperone aboard. The Unicorn Web site said that the ship's passengers from voyage to voyage include executive women, teenage girls or executive teams. Passengers are expected to learn how to handle the ship. The Web site said that the Unicorn had planned to leave Boston Sunday and arrive in Newport on Friday. From there it was to have sailed to Port Jefferson, N.Y., Mystic, and Cape Cod. just sailed through woods hole while it was flushing in too the cape on the other side, very shallow and at 10:am that just don't sound right should have went through at high tide or at least when all the water is filling in the other direction.
plus under no power, damn pretty dangerous place to be in a wood boat in 15 feet of water with current like a washing machine, sometimes it shows 6 feet there at the keel
