Journal Staff Report

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Richard Hatch, Rhode Island's infamous reality-television alumnus who went to prison for not paying taxes on the $1 million he won on the show Survivor, was being held Tuesday evening at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne, Mass.

Hatch, 48, was serving the final months of his sentence on home confinement in Newport. Hours earlier, he had appeared on the NBC Today show.

A correctional facility official confirmed Hatch was being held but referred all questions on why he had been taken into custody to a corrections spokesman, who was not immediately available for comment after business hours Tuesday.

During an appearance on the Today Show, Hatch said he received an unfair trial in Providence in 2006 because the federal judge, Ernest C. Torres, prohibited Hatch's lawyer from polling the jury about their feelings on homosexuality. Hatch is gay.

Rhode Island's former U.S. Attorney Robert Clark Corrente, whose office prosecuted Hatch, minced few words reacting to Hatch's charge Tuesday morning:

"The guy is delusional."

"I think it's preposterous,'' said Corrente. "The evidence was this guy got a 6-foot Styrofoam check for $1 million on national television and never paid his taxes. It wasn't really that complicated. His sexual orientation didn't have anything to do with it.''

why would the Today show even waste airtime by putting this guy in the National Spotlight? I agree with the prosecutor, Hatch is delusional. Duh, pay your taxes! Stop this babble. He didn't pay, he perjered himself at trial. He's guilty, guilty, guilty. What more of this story is needed? Treated unfairly my butt.

Dave said:

Hatch made his case by stating that the TV show represented that the million dollars was "after tax" money. Someone might have told him that verbally, but he should have gotten it in writing - then he could have produced the document and the network would have been liable.

Hatch might be a liar, but he might also have gotten royally screwed by the network. Bottom line - GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!

JerryRI said:

Come now Dave, the only thing in writing that was important was the 1040 signed by Hatch that stated $1,000,000 in income and $0 in taxes. What is so complicated about that?

Jim said:

The guy wins two million bucks and he doesn't know he has to pay taxes!! At the very least he has to pay estimated taxes as we all do.His defense....there picking on me because I'm gay.He needs help.

Jim said:

The Feds went after Hatch because he is gay. Oh,by the way, Mickey Mouse has been selected by NASA to go on the first mission to Mars!!

Steve said:

Three people who auditioned and were approached by the producers of Survivor stated that if they won they would be treated as if they were employees of the network and that the Federal taxes would be deducted autonmatically before the actual check for the winnings was given to them. CBS is known for not keeping their promises and not living up to their contracts.

Steve Micke said:

Dave,
Hatch never stated that the money was after taxes, He stated that they told him that they would pay the taxes would be paid automatically.

chris said:

Our country has appionted officials and congressmen who don't pay taxes either......I wonder if they'll ever see any jail time?

Annoyed said:

Maybe as a school age child, Richard Hatch began his life's ambition to be a pathological liar. I can just see him saying to his teacher, "The Dog ate my homework" and him stomping up and down, believing his own lies to be true. Spoiled, rotten, and pathological he is. I can't believe some people actually believe him and back his claims on this string. Get a life, grow up, and face the truth. He's grasping for more face time on TV.

zman07 said:

This buffoon needs to take his heterophobia and go away. He's delusional to the point that he is believing all of his own lies.

Not only was his 15 minutes of fame too long, but it is over. Only an idiot like Matt Lauer would interview him and keep his "dream" of fame alive.

Hatch is nothing more than a male Paris Hilton: no substance, no talent, no common sense.

thorsdog said:

Ole Dickie boy should just crawl back in hole and close the hatch....

B.Thoughtful said:

Remember when Obama was filling top level government jobs and a lot of the people had tax problems? Why aren't THEY in federal prison?

Stacey said:

Good for him. He's probably paid uncle sam his entire life. Screw the government. Everyone's so against him cause he's gay. He's a realist. Move on.

Mike said:

In jail. This is hillairous. Right where this sociopath belongs.

bubba said:

how can we forget this guy if he won't go away

einstein said:

So now you know where the term Booby Hatch comes from.

Bill C said:

Hatch should've been appointed to be Treasury Secretary. It worked when Geithner said he forgot to pay his taxes! And Geithner never had to go to trial - he had a Senate confirmation to attend instead.

Possum said:

They "told" him? He claims that he's a smart guy, yet he didn't get it in writing? And if he was told to pay the taxes, it's only common sense to pay the taxes and THEN go after CBS. He didn't get convicted because he's gay, he got convicted because he's dumb.

Kim said:

Note to self. When I win the lottery do not hire Hatch's accountant/tax attorney.

carol said:

I'm not entirely sure why anyone is interested in hearing what Richard Hatch has to say. To imply he didn't get a fair trial based on his homosexuality is just way too funny for me to even imagine. Maybe if during his trial he stuck to one story instead of 4 different ones things may have been different.
Serve your sentence and lets be done with this guy and move on to something more important.

Bobby G said:

Does anyone else find it ironic that we put people in jail at a cost of nearly $50K a year because they didn't pay their taxes? That just doesn't seem logical to me. The government claims these people owe them money, so they pay to put them in jail. Hmmm. Thats like getting upset at your kid for coming home at 10pm and then telling them from now on, they're not to come home until 11.

Byron said:

He stated that they told him that the taxes would be paid automatically. Opinions are
profuse and omnipresent. They are worth nothing without documentation and written proof. Then if the issue comes up, you have something concrete to fall back on for evidence. Otherwise it is a 'he says, she says, they say' situation. It is just hearsay without written documentation. There was a terrible misunderstanding involved, but the
taxes should have been held against the issuing of the check he received. We all know that. People
who have 'your' money will do strange things to keep you in the 'dark' It happens all the time with estates and family trusts. Why do you think the lawyers make off with so much of the money?

leo777 said:

Hatch,is he serious?HE now pulls
out the gay card from his wallet goes past
go to jail sign and collects 200.

pm said:

Wonder how much of that million he has spent on lawyers?
I believe he also didn't claim some other form of income that year.

Its almost like he needs to say in public over and over..I'm gay. Might want to invest some of that money in therapy.

Govstench said:

This guy is just craving attention. Perhaps the media is having a slow news day so they went after this guy for the interview.
If anyone is wondering why he went back to the pen, the dope was told not to have any contact with the media. If you noticed, when Cianci went from the half-way-house to home confinement, he made no statements and ignored the media. He was told to do so as part of the parol agreement.
This guy will never learn and deserves what he gets.

quesondriac said:

Hatch was jailed because he committed perjury.
Pure and simple. He was also jailed to discourage tax cheats without a chance in hell from going to trial. The whole trial and jail thing is extremely counter productive for everyone.

And this is why I don't watch Survivor. They reward back stabbing lying cheats. Hatch is not a role model. Never has been, never will be.
