Same-sex marriage protesters assaulted with food

WARWICK, R.I. -- The police are investigating an assault Tuesday on Bald Hill Road.

The weapon of choice: soda, salsa, eggs ...

"Your basic garden variety of food condiments," Capt. Robert Nelson said Wednesday.

It started as the four men stood at the median on Bald Hill Road and East Avenue around 2:40 p.m. protesting against same-sex marriage.

The location, Nelson noted, afforded them a roomy median and prime visibility.

They caught the attention of a group of women in one of the cars.

The women, who apparently objected to their message, flung a soda bottle at the men and vowed to return.

And back they were, about 15 minutes later, hurling at the men a mélange of food ingredients and drinks and a full repertoire of profanities, Nelson said.

One of the women swashed a protester with pepper spray.

No one was hurt and no arrests have been made, Nelson said

I support same sex marriage. I am deeply ashamed of the actions of these women. They failed to recognize the fact that the right to protest against same sex marriage is the exact same right that allows us to protest against marriage discrimination. We can not take that right away just because we don't like what is being said. Now I have a personal message to the food throwers. Given the location of where this incident happen your actions were observed. Do you think you did a good job showing that you deserved the same rights as others and that you are respectful? Do you think you did anything to advance the cause ? Would you find it acceptable if you had been pelted with food and pepper sprayed because you were holding a sign endorsing same sex marriage ?

The message here? You can do anything you want to moral people defending marriage, but if the attack had been the other way around, it would have been called a "hate crime," and those people would have been charged with felonies. To the people defending marriage, "Blessed are you when you are persecuted for justice sake..." Don't mess with marriage.

If it had been gay activists assaulted with produce, the outcry would have made the national news.

Why are liberal assaults on dissenting viewpoints not condemned? Why is free speech only free if it's liberal-approved?

Brienna said:

That's awesome. Shows Rhode Island doesn't tolerate hate and hateful messages. =D

This was childish and uncalled for. Even simple name-calling would be uncalled for.

As much as I earnestly support marriage equality, here and everywhere, any decent person must reject such boorish behaviour. What was their point? That those of us who support marriage equality are willing to stoop to this level?

They owe their victims -- who were only expressing their views, freely and peacefully -- a public apology. At the very least: assault with pepper spray is no joke (and possibly actionable).

As a marriage equality advocate, I'm ashamed to be associated to any degree with anything like this. Most of us (though apparently not all of us) respect our opponents in this issue, as fellow citizens, taxpayers, and voters, and would never think of doing anything like this.

What? No arrests or charges? I only took a few law classes and even I know and assault and possible battery (pepper spray) when I see one.

Hopefully someone got the plate on the car, better yet someone has video so the police can prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

...but it's okay to hate people that hate...wait that didn't come out right...

It is absolutely amazing how intolerant liberals are of opposing views. They've become so accustomed to having the stage all to themselves that they don't think anyone else is entitled to their opinion. Remember several years back when those bastions of elitism at Brown University stole all the campus newspapers because they didn't like the fact that someone with a conservative point of view was speaking on campus. Juvenile to the extreme.
Unfortunately, the totally biased and liberal media aids, abets and empowers their antics.
Hooray for the protestors. Same sex marriage is wrong and immoral. Don't like that opinion, I really don't care. Move to the socialist republic of Vermont (baths and soap optional).

Once again.. I feel there are a ton of missing information. The people who protest have a right to protest on both sides of the gamit.. NOW... I I CAN NOT believe that they just drove by and tossed a can / bottle of soda out the window at them and came back for more.. Have you seen some of the signs they use to protest this? Lets face it.. they should not have done this but what did the protesters do to provoke this? Why were they protesting? You usually only see these protest then there is something going on at the sate level..I got a gut feeling they asked for it.. Whats the real truth here?

Why were no arrests made? Is the Warwick PD on the side of the idiots that hurled things at the protestors?

DJ said:

There is a difference between protesting to gain civil rights, and protesting to deny other people their civil rights. When you go out there and make a statement that you want to oppress an entire group of people and treat them like second-class citizens, then you shouldn't be surprised when you get food thrown at you by a few of those people. In fact, the protesters are fortunate that they were spared from something more violent than just food and pepper spray! I understand the actions of these women and I might have done the same in their place, or even worse.

"No one was hurt and no arrests have been made, Nelson said."

No one was hurt? They were pepper-sprayed!!

Bill said:

I do not condone these actions at all.. But its amazes me how if the tides were turned it wouldnt be Horray.. it would be HOW COULD THEY.. get over it.. its a matter of time till its legal here in this arm pit of a state. This state is a mess in every manner! Now on the fact that they were just standing there holding signs? O COME ON.. do you think they were.. I will have to bet that they were doing more then holding signs.. I would have to say they were making racial / sexest remarks. I am not saying attack them but fight back with protests. There is a fine line between freedom of speach and disrespecting another person. So all of you who think this is ok.. You should seek treatment. Lets go back a month of so when that church group came down and protested gay rights.. do you remember the turn out?? OO YES.. it was for gay rights..

Ric said:

Liberal don't want opposing views pushed on them but never stop to think of the views they are pushing on us. Marriage is between a man and a woman. That's what marriage is. And society has a right to define that. Also, when the gay rights amendment was passed many years ago, we were promised by the advocates that they would not push for gay marriage in the state. Why have they lied and gone back on that promise?

And this act is typical of the hate espoused by the left. If you adhere to your religious values they call you an ignorant bigot. Don't be intimidated by them.

Chris said:

I am highly amused that the conservatives commenting here have the nerve to say this is part of a trend of liberal violence against conservatives.

Does the name George Tiller ring a bell to any of you? Eggs and soda are a far cry from a bullet to the head.

dave said:

While the assault on Rte 2 was shocking, even more shocking are the comments above that condone the assault or at least minimize its outrageousness.

I don't think it's fair to blame "liberals" in general as intolerant, since the vast majority of liberals practice the toleration they preach. But in one subsection of liberalism -- I mean the gay movement subsection -- intolerance is very widespread. It is almost de rigueur. A number of the comments above illustrate this fact.

JJ said:

The comments here are disgusting. Why are three girls who fed into the hatred of the prostestors suddenly representing everyone that supports Gay Marriage? Or liberals even!

No one took a vote about heterosexual marriage, so why should anyone get to vote about homosexual marriage? Love is love. It's disgusting and disturbing how many of you are still under the archaiac belief that gay marriage is wrong and immoral. So is adultery! Yet people who break their vows and cheat on their spouses have the right to marry again, and again, and again yet I can't even marry the person I love?

I applaud anyone who stands up for what they believe in, yes even these people protesting. I'd like to see someone like "George M" out there protesting his beliefs but you know we won't because he knows that his beliefs are outdated and that he should be ashamed for judging others simply because they are somewhat different from him.

I was one of the people attacked. Let's get the facts straight. The most serious attack was a glass jar chucked right at my face. What damaged could that have done? Being covered with mace is no laughing matter too.

The assault was unprovoked. We were holding signs saying "Honk for Traditional Marriage," and "God's Marriage = 1 Man + 1 Woman." Is that a message of hate?

Another thing: the attack was premeditated. They marched straight to us in a bee line. When they got close enough, they yelled; "Get them!" That doesn't sound like they came over for tea.

One last thing, the arrests were made. All four were apprehended, thanks to the diligent work of the Warwick PD.

During this campaign in support of Traditional marriage, we have received a lot of death threats. Where is the love and tolerance from the homosexuals?

Eden said:

That's wonderful.

Neal said:

swordsman, I completely disagree with your views, but I would have walked up to you to talk it out instead of throwing things at you. What would that have accomplished, you know? And I want everyone to go up and read Chris and JJ's comments again so they sink in.

~~We were holding signs saying "Honk for Traditional Marriage," and "God's Marriage = 1 Man + 1 Woman." Is that a message of hate?~~
No. It's simply your opinion (nothing more, nothing less), and I'll defend to the death your right to have it.

Frankly, I find it kind of pitiful that there were only 4 of you and that you attempt to bolster your narrow worldview/morality by standing on street corners. Coincidentally enough, you also located yourself yesterday at the intersections of Pawtucket and Waterman in my hometown of East Providence, where earlier this season the Westboro Baptist Church gathered to spread a similar, albeit more hateful, message.

The comments made here, rife with grammar/spelling errors and ALL CAPS messages of intolerance, ostensibly show who is left that holds the anti-humanistic values; those who don't have the education to know any better.
