CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- Charlestown's Winnapaug Pond will reopen to shellfishing Saturday, the state Department of Environmental Management announced Friday. The DEM closed Winnapaug Pond and Point Judith Pond to shellfishing on July 2 due to poor water quality following heavy rainfall and related runoff. Water samples taken Thursday showed Winnapaug Pond's bacteria levels were safe again. Bacteria levels in Point Judith Pond are still high. DEM took additional samples from Point Judith Pond Friday. Results from those tests are expected Saturday. If results meet shellfish criteria, DEM could reopen that pond at sunrise on Sunday. Up to date information on the closure will be available on DEM's 24-hour shellfishing hotline at (401) 222-2900. |
