WARWICK, R.I. -- A West Greenwich man has been arrested on felony larceny and embezzlement charges, the Attorney General's Office announced Friday. James Vieira, 62, of 12 Valerie Drive, was indicted secretly Wednesday on five counts of larceny over $500, five counts of obtaining money over $500 under false pretenses, and five counts of embezzlement over $100. A secret indictment means that neither an arrest nor a District Court complaint led to the indictment. Vieira pleaded not guilty at his Superior Court arraignment Thursday and was released on $100,000 bail with surety. As part of his bail, Judge Stephen Nugent ordered Vieira to sign a waiver of extradition and turn over his passport to the authorities. It is alleged that Vieira stole more than $500 on two occasions between the dates of July 19, 2001, and September 15, 2003, and once each between the dates of June 28, 2002, and June 7, 2005, June 18, 2002, and January 25, 2005, and June 18, 2002, and April 10, 2004. In each case, the victim was a person over the age of 65, according to a news release. It is also alleged that Vieira obtained money of more than $500 by false pretenses, with the intent to cheat or defraud, on two occasions between the dates of July 19, 2001, and September 15, 2003, and once each between the dates of June 28, 2002 and June 7, 2005, June 18, 2002, and January 25, 2005, and June 18, 2002, and April 10, 2004. In each case, the victim was a person over the age of 65. It is alleged that the defendant, while acting as officer, agent, or employee, embezzled or fraudulently converted to his own use more than $100 on two occasions between the dates of July 19, 2001, and September 15, 2003, and once each between the dates of June 28, 2002, and June 7, 2005, June 18, 2002 and January 25, 2005, and June 18, 2002, and April 10, 2004. The Rhode Island State Police conducted the investigation. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this posting gave the incorrect age for James Vieira.
