WARWICK, R.I. --The 19-year-old man who died in a car accident early Tuesday was a 2008 graduate of Warwick Veterans Memorial High School and a student at Community College of Rhode Island. The police say the car Kory Z. Kenyon was driving struck a tree and a telephone pole. Kenyon, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries at Rhode Island Hospital. Gerry Habershaw, the principal of the Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, said that Kenyon was an athlete and a scholar who was "well respected by the faculty and his friends." Out of 276 graduates in the class of 2008, Kenyon was ranked 35th. He was a member of the Rhode Island National Honors Society. Kenyon played four years on the high school volleyball team. In 2008, he was selected by high school coaches as a member of theall-division team for Division II South in boys volleyball. "He was the kind of kid who blended into the school. Everyone liked him. He had many friends on the faculty and with his classmates. He was a well-respected young man," Habershaw said. "Over the years the last few years, there seems to be a nonstop line of tragedies," Habershaw said. Habersaw said the school had been dealing with the death of a relative of one of the teachers and now the death of Kenyon. Kenyon was driving west on Church Avenue when his car left the roadway and struck a tree and then a telephone pole, according to police. The police were called to the single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Church and Bugbee avenues at about 12:13 a.m. Tuesday, according to Lt. Thomas C. Hannon. The police say that excess speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash. The gray 2004 Volkswagen Jetta broke in half, according to the police. The impact severed the telephone pole at its base. -- With reports from Journal staff writer Tatiana Pina (An earlier version of this report was filed at 8:22 a.m.) CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil.
