Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly was crowded for the third consecutive day.

WESTERLY, R.I. -- A canopy of brightly colored beach umbrellas blanketed Westerly's Misquamicut State Beach Monday.

That's a telltale sign that the sun is out -- and business is good.

Still, the beach is yet to reach full capacity, according to 20-year-old lifeguard Matt LaPlume. When Misquamicut gets "crowded," you don't see sand at all, LaPlume said.

Saturday was one of those days.

Well-protected from the sun at Misquamicut, Maddox O'Connell, 2 months old, picked a great day for his first visit to a beach.

At the start of the holiday weekend -- coinciding with the first sunny day after several miserable days of rain and even hail -- beachgoers flooded the beach, overflowing the parking lots. On the beach, it was towel to towel for most of the day, Bonnie L. Mello, beach manager, said.

Just days earlier, with thunderstorms moving through, the parking lots had been full -- of water: No beach goers to be seen.

So workers focused on cleaning up and sprucing up the beach. But there's only so much cleaning you can do, Mello said. And the extended gloomy weather was taking a toll on workers' morale, said Mello.

"It's been awful," Mello said.

But not anymore. "Today, it's really beautiful," said Carmella Perrone, a Westerly woman waiting for friends at the beach. "A beautiful, gorgeous day."

What will tomorrow bring? Partly cloudy skies, the National Weather Service says. Or depending on your outlook, partly sunny.
