PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Providence man wanted for robbing banks in Newport and Providence last week was arrested in Boston Sunday night. Dennis R. Tasker, 38, who just got out of prison last month for bank robbery, was suspected of robbing the Sovereign Bank branch at 212 Thayer St. in Providence on July 7 and the Sovereign Bank branch on Thames Street in Newport on July 8. In both cases, the robber handed the tellers a note that demanded money, but did not show a weapon. The police in Providence and Newport said Friday they issued warrants for Tasker, charging him with second-degree robbery in each case. Tasker was released from the Adult Correctional Institutions on June 7, which was his most recent stay in a history of crime that goes back to 1991. His record includes convictions on robberies, stolen cars or break-ins in Providence or Newport. He is also a sex offender, after a 1998 guilty plea of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy at the carriage house of the Miramar estate in Newport. |
