PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- There was a little confusion on Smith Hill about when the state would officially celebrate Independence Day. This year, July 4 fell on a Saturday. The federal government was closed on Friday, July 3. But Rhode Island's state employees recognize the birth of the nation on Monday, July 6. Most federal offices were closed Friday (mail was delivered, however), but most state offices -- including the Division of Motor Vehicles -- are closed today, according to Governor Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe. Why the difference? State law is very specific on this one. If July 4 falls on a weekend, "then state employees will celebrate the holiday on the following Monday," according to general law 25-1-1. -- Steve Peoples, Journal State House Bureau CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil.
