RICHMOND, R.I. -- The police have identified the victim of a motorcycle crash Sunday as Kimberly G. Barbera, 20, of 81 Stewart Way in South Kingstown.

The police said Henry D. Lamb, 21, of Charlestown, was traveling north on Beaver River Road in Richmond shortly after 7 p.m. when he lost control of the 2008 Yamaha motorcycle and struck a tree and rocks, according to a statement issued Monday by the police.

Neither Lamb nor Barbera were wearing helmets and Lamb appears to have been speeding, the police said.

Both were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Barbera later died of her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Providence Journal has been following this story as it develops. Our initial report was posted at 10:15 a.m.

Once again, speed is the factor, these kids go out every day, I am certain they think it'll never happen to them, however, it keeps happening!!!!! Tuff on the parents and everyone involved!!!! Get a grip!!!!!!!!!

Young men are not able to understand risk. They are programmed to hunt and kill. Because modern life doesn't allow them to do that, they enjoy riding motorcycles in suicidally inappropriate ways. Unfortunately, young women enjoy the company of young men so much that they don't always understand that they are putting their own lives at risk. Sympathies to both young lives are due: to the young woman whose life is ended, and to the young man who ended it.

You do not need to be insensitive. I graduated with her. She is the 3rd, almost 4th, student of our class to die since senior year. Have a little compassion for those affected.
At this point in time it doesn't matter if speed was a factor, if it was their fault, or if they were doing something foolish such as not wearing helmets. Right now her friends and family are mourning and respect should be shown.

Accidents like this are horrible for friends and families. But sadly every generation has to experience tragedies like these. History shows we don't learn very well from our mistakes.

I'm Kim's uncle. I don't like the cold hearted response Happy 23 said. If that was your family member would you have been as harsh. Please, the next time you hear about a young person dying, please think about the family, and how it's going to affect them for the rest of their lives.

How can you be third almost fourth? Either you're third or fourth.

The families deserve respect, and commiseration as they grieve. The individuals do not due to their lack of value for life, their own and others. If they had any reverence for life they wouldn't have been behaving in such a manner.

I agree. It doesn't matter how it happened, a young life was lost and two families are greatly affected by it. My heart goes out to their families, especially Kimberly's. God bless Kimberly and her family.

I'm interested to see what Mr. Lamb is charged with in this small state... What does the negligant taking of a life warrant these days in RI?

So sorry to hear about this tragedy ~ My prayers go out to the family & friends of Kimberly Barbera as well as Henry Lamb. Kimberly will be sorely missed... The SK class of 2007 is an amazing group of young men & women, who've suffered the loss of 3 precious members all too soon as well as another who is overcoming the odds, by surviving a horrific accident caused by a drunk driver.
God bless us all... as we try to understand...

It's funny you say that, it was my sister that survived that horrible accident. And what did the drunk driver get? 8 years and a possibility of parole after a year or two. I really hope this kid gets a lot more time then that in jail. Hopefully this will deter others from being so wreckless especially with a passenger. Save your excitement for the track where you're less likely to hurt the innocent. God bless Kim and her family I know what it feels like to lose someone fortunately my sister came back and this clown prevented the Barbera family from ever seeing their child alive again. It's hard to believe there is a better place for Kim but there is and she is watching down on you.

Third classmate to die, and a fourth almost did but miraculously made it after being hit by a drunk driver on the side of the road. 2 years later she's still fighting to regain any sense of normalcy in her life. That's how Kim was almost the fourth.

I worked with Kim for a couple years - I am very sad to hear of this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends, she will be sorely missed.

Words cannot express how saddened i am to hear of Kimmie's loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Barbera family during this difficult time.

I worked with Kim as well and I was in complete shock when I heard of this tragedy. My heart goes out to her family and friends, I am truly sorry.

"2wheelcommuter", I am appalled by your ignorance. Drivers are responsible for their passengers and their safety.Do not forget that there are laws that must be followed in order to engage in this alternative to hunting and killing.

"no body", Kim certainly did have reverence for life. She was always talking about her future plans and how she wanted to be successful. She was a wonderful person.

My heart goes out to both families. Sometimes
poor choices are made and by some miracle
consequences are not irreversible. Other
times... one poor choice, one mistake...
and the hands of time can never be reversed.
Either way you look at it, several lives were affected forever in just a few split seconds,
and I cannot begin to imagine the depth of their pain.
Thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.
