WASHINGTON -- Woonsocket will get $545,000 and the state of Rhode Island $3.28 million in federal funds to fight homelessness.

"We cannot afford to ignore this problem," said in a news release Sen. Jack Reed, who is responsible for the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act. "These federal dollars will help local communities assist families on the brink of becoming homeless."

"We have already seen tent cities forming, shelters turning away people in need, and most major cities reporting double digit increases in the numbers of families experiencing homelessness," he said.

The federal money will fund rental assistance (up to 18 months), security deposits and utility deposits as well as utility payments, moving costs and hotel vouchers. Payments will be made directly to the landlords or companies.

"It is a wise investment of federal resources that will save taxpayers money in the long run by preventing homelessness, promoting the development of permanent supportive housing, and optimizing self-sufficiency," Reed said.

Hopefully RI won't screw this up & help out just anyone. I am all for helping the homeless, but the honest ones who work & try. Right now the sincere homeless are left homeless because crossroads is infested with alcoholics & drug abusers. There are so many people out there, who work every week and cannot make ends meet and our losing their houses to foreclosure. But i think the ones who are going to get help should be able to produced and show a pay check stub to show their trying. Just like Low income daycare, or any state assistance you have to show proof every 3 months when you on the program.

How is supportive housing, meaning you are receiving some type of help to be able to live there, optimizing self-sufficiency? That statement alone contradicts itself. If you want to optimize self-sufficiency then take that money and directly tie it job training and/or placement. Create jobs, people make money, people become self-sufficient. You give people money they become dependent. Common sense.

Homelessnes is like the common cold. There are many things to help the symptoms, but a cure hasn't been found. Give a person with a cold a box of kleenex, they'll get better and move on. Shelters and kitchens help, but don't solve the problem. There is no solution or cure. This problem has been around alot longer than anyone alive today.

I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HELPING PEOPLE BUT THEY NEED TO HELP THEMSELVES ALSO. I JUST GOT LAID OFF AFTER WORKING 29 YEARS AND TWO MONTHS EIGHT MONTHS SHY OF MY PENSION. I OWN A HOME AND BECAUSE TWO WORK AND HAVE INCOME I DO NOT RECEIVE ANY HELP AND NOW THAT I AM NOT EMPLOYED FULL TIME AND MY HUSBAND WORKS I WILL NOT GET ANY HELP EITHER. I FIND IT VERY ANNOYING THAT WE GIVE PEOPLE WHO COME FROM OTHER COUNTRIES ETC WELFARE, HOMES, MEDICAL, SOCIAL SECURITY ETC AND WE CAN'T HELP OUR OWN PEOPLE WHO ARE HURTING. LIVED IN RI FOR 49 YEARS AND HAVE PAID HIGH TAXES FOR A LONG TIME WITH NO CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG I KNOW THE CHILDREN ARE NOT AT FAULT BUT THEY ALWAYS CUT THE PROGRAMS FOR THE CHILDREN. SORRY FOR RAMBLING ON BUT I AM A LITTLE ANGREY ABOUT LOSING MY JOB AND THERE IS AN EMPLOYEE WHO HAS ONLY BEEN THER FOR SEVEN MONTHS. HAVE A GREAT NIGHT AND WEEKEND
