PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island will receive about $1.2 million and Massachusetts $7.4 million in federal grants to deal with swine flu and prepare for the fall flu season. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Friday that Rhode Island is eligible to receive $913,283 to prepare for potential vaccination campaigns, reduce exposure to swine flu and improve influenza monitoring and investigations and $314,726 to help hospitals and health care systems prepare for swine flu outbreaks and other public health emergencies. Massachusetts will receive $5.5 million for preparation and health monitoring and another $1.9 million to help hospitals and health care systems get ready for any public health emergencies. The grants are part of $260 million that will be distributed nationwide. "With flu season around the corner, we must remain vigilant and do all we can to prepare our nation and protect public health," Sebelius said. "These grants will give states valuable resources to step up their flu preparedness efforts." |
